Final say on what oil is the best for a NEON?
What oil do you recommend for a 2000 NEON. Since I bought the car over 3 years ago I have had regular maintenance and oil changes religiously. Now my warranty is over after 70,000 miles and I used to put in Penzoil 10w. I've heard that I was supposed to be using a synthetic in it. It was even a factory recommended thing. Question. What sythetic should I use? I'm thinking of Valvoline 5w. Why is it that a lot of people use 5w vs 10w? I need to know cuz I'm changing the oil this weekend. Also does a K&N oil filter work any better than normal filters? Final say. BEST OIL FOR A NEON!??

I've been using Amsoil for a few years. I change it every 20-25K whether it needs it or not.

Okay thanks for the advice I'll look into Amosoil. But what the heck! You change oil every 20-25,000 miles. Is that correct? Excuse me but I thought you needed to change it every 3 to 5 thousand miles. That must be some damn good oil!

Re: Final say on what oil is the best for a NEON?
I have a 2002 neon, and my old 1990 dodge caravan. I have used synthetic for years. My old dodge has 300,000 klms and it is quieter than my neon. Only drawback with a synthetic is a older or high mileage vehicle might loose more oil through gasket leaks, **** if your leaking already***. Take it from there. You will do just fine if you change your oil and filter regularly. You know the saying, you get what you pay for.

yes, you have to change oil every 5000 miles, otherwise your engine could start to dont perform the same as it did before, and you will start to have problems..

I've never heard of 5,000 miles but I've always changed my oil at 3k. I think I'll still change it at 3 just because I like a super clean engine. The guy below Scatch posted that he changes his oil every 25,000 miles
Amsoil sounds great! I don't think that is possible.

Re: Final say on what oil is the best for a NEON?
Most synthetics are the same although I read once that moble is the only true synthetc. Oh yeh, back to the main question. If you live where its a 100 degrees at all times, use at least a 10w30. If your in a odd country like canada, 5w30 works fine all through the year. Changing your oil depends on your driving habits, and your climate. Like if its very dry and dusty where you are change your oil evry 3000 klms. Follow your owners manual if unsure. P.s, don't forget about your air cleaner.

BTW, Mobil is NOT the only true synthetic. |

I did good yesterday and put in Mobil 1 5w-30 with a K&N oil filter. I heard the K&N is the best so I went for that one it is really hard to tell with the oil filters cuz I just can't go out and test the oil. It would be nice to find out in a test if the better oil filters really do make a difference. I chose Mobil cuz it was just so popular with a lot of people and I couldn't find any Amsoil where I live, maybe next time.
By the way I changed my tranny fluid and filter too, runs great at 78,000 miles now with out a single problem.

oil
i would consider using the new castrol gtx high mile oil with a k&n oil filter and a quart of lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer. i have a 95 neon that i bought with 102,000 miles and when i would start it, it would have slight engine and valve noise. then i started using that combo and my engine been giving me the silent treatment ever since and began to run alot smoother. i now have 122,000 and it still runs and sounds great i suggest u give it a try and u will be highly satisfied, i promise

Re: Final say on what oil is the best for a NEON?
I am partial to Mobile1 myself. I've had the best luck with it and have decided to stick with it. Kinda like a "if it aint broke don't fix it" thing. Although you can go over 3K miles between changes on synthetics I still do it every 3K miles or 4 months, whichever comes first. Just turned 159,000 miles this week
