This is a difficult question to answer because alot depends on personal preferance. Personally (and these views are by no means the rule but they are held by quite a few 3s owners) custom is the best way to go. Well I guess first I should ask, is it n/a or TT? If it's a n/a then the 2 best choices are either a TT exhaust off a TT OR a custom exhaust with piping from a shop and a Dynomax (what I have....sounds badass), Magnaflow, Apexi, Borla muffler with tips. Don't get a Flowmaster . Your friend can go with dual or single exhaust, it's up to them. I kept mine single so I wouldn't have to cut the bumper.

Here's what I did:

kept the stock cat (for now until I get my testpipe to replace it) and had 2.5" piping run to a Dynomax muffler and then more 2.5" to one set of Hooker Classic Euro Style dual tips. Looks very nice and sounds nice too (although I'm not sure it's loud enough for me; we'll see after the tp )

If they want to go dual, the easiest way is:
piping after cat to a muffler with 1 inlet and 2 outlets. Then piping routed to each side to tips. (A muffler won't fit on the passenger side unless it's an oval). Good luck. Feel free to post with more specific questions.

on my car i just put 3" from the cat back split into two around the gastank, no mufflers into 3" tips. it sounds pretty cool and definitely helps spool up time
