Durango 99 Shut off while driving
Hi guys,
I have Dodge durango model 1999, 84000KMs milage. I noticed something very wired it stop immediately and got (Check engin) light on. It wouldnt start when I try to restart it unless to wait for 5 mins then it starts as nothing happened to it. I am very concerned about the frequency of that failure and I had bad situation on the road specially when I am on high way. Any one have the same b4 ? Please your comments would be highly appreciated. Thanks alot. |

Re: Durango 99 Shut off while driving
I have a 99 with a 5.9 and it did the same thing. It left me stranded though a couple of times. I bought a chilton manual and went through the trouble guide. Long story short all the little controls on the throtle body had to be replaced along with the computer. I hope you have the extended warranty. Take it to an autozone or something simular and they will plug a hand held computer to it and tell you what parts are failing, Except the computer, the dealer say only they can test it, of course. $700.00!

Re: Durango 99 Shut off while driving
I've owned four Dodge automobiles. 3 caravans and a Dakota. Each one had the same problem---crankshaft position sensor failure. The symptoms were as you describe, total shutdown.Fortunatly all the cases were covered under the warrantee. Good luck.

Its your CPU. The heat from your motor is screwing up the cpu. It looks like the CPU was either put to close to the motor or Dodge didn't think that the heat would damage the board. You will have a hard time convincing the dealer this because when they check the computer it has no memory of the failure. The reason for this is because the memory clears its self when it resets.

My Wife Has A 99 Durango. It's Currently Experiencing The Same Problem...it Shuts Off For No Reason Then Has To Cool Off Before It Will Restart. The Problem Can Not Be A Faulty Fuel Pump. Fuel Pumps Do Not Reset Themselves, When They Stop Working They Stop And Must Be Replaced. The Problem Is Electrical. The Vehicle Has Been Tested At Autozone And Firestone...no Codes Were Picked Up By Diagnostics. The Codes Cannot Be Picked Up Because The Check Engine Light Is Not On When Being Tested. The On Board Cpu Only Stores Trouble Codes If The Check Engine Light Comes On And Stays On. I've Done Research And Narrowed It Down To Five Things..idler Air Control Motor, Maps Sensor, Ckp Sensor, Tps Sensor, And Last The Pcm. If The 1st Four Are Replaced And Problem Continues Them The Pcm May Have To Be Replaced Or Reprogrammed.

Re: Durango 99 Shut off while driving
I bought a used '99 Durango and I "do" love it. This Problem did occur though right after I got it. It shut off probably 10-15 times (in parking lots, on the freeway, anywhere, anytime) before they replaced the computer (CPU). I have not had a problem in 2 years now!

If you have a check engine light, Autozone can probably read your codes & possibly give you an answer. They don't charge for the service. Get a Haynes manual if you don't have one. It is handy for a variety of jobs. Could be fuel, could be a computer or something electronic. Let us know what you find out about the codes & your progress throughout. We always like to know what fixes things & what doesn't. Last edited by steelerguy; 10-13-2006 at 06:35 PM. |
