Newbie in the house...advice needed.

Alright ppl...you may be thinking it's stupid of me coming in here and asking questions like this, but I'm trying to collect information from as many sources as i can so bear with me. any advice you guys have to offer is great.

I'm 15 and i'm gonna drive in a year. my parents are gonna get me a car, and i wanna start racing. I know it's stupid. you're probably thinking: oh, some wannabe racer guy. But that's exactly what my friends said, and i kinda started this bet with 'em that i'll be racing in a year.

pretty much, i'm a stupid guy who got myself into something i don't really know much about. so i'm trying to learn as much about cars as i can so when i get my car, i know what i'm doing.

I know a few things already, but i'm still far from where i should be.

I'm thinking of getting an Acura RSX Type-S (6-speed, any year). I want to put a Hi-Power HKS exhaust on it, and eventually get a Greddy Turbo Kit. but as i said before, i dont really know alot about this stuff so i have alot of questions...

1. Someone told me you SHOULD GET blow-off valves ASAP after getting a turbo (they said it'd be safer on the car). What are blow-off valves (what do they do)? And why do I need them with turbo?

2. What is intake? The same person told me the first things I should start off with are intake and exhaust. I already have the HKS exhaust thing down, but what is an intake (again, what does it do)? I've seen alot of intakes that look really long (kinda snakey), but the HKS intake looks really small. What's with that?

3. I know what an intercooler is. I need one with a turbo, don't I? Do they come with the turbo kits?

4. When you hear street racing cars shift, you hear a loud thumping (or thudding, or even clicking) sound when they shift. Is this a special stick? or clutch? How do you get that sound?

5. So here's the summary of what i'm thinking of getting:

Intake/Exhaust
Turbo/Intercooler/Blow-Off Valves
Exterior (Body Kit, Lights, etc.)

I know that there is alot more that I could get after that such as better injection systems, NOS, better engine electronics, etc. But I don't know really where to start. Could you please tell me what other things I can get (and what they do) after getting a Turbo? Turbo is kinda where my knowledge ends, and I dont know where to go from there.

thanks...

1) a blow off valve is a pressure relieve valve where it vents off excess boost from the turbo when the throttle plate ( gas pedal ) closes. this is what makes the *whoosh* or high pitch whistle sound when you hear a turbo charged car shift. a blow off valve for a turbo charged honda is no problem since they use manifold pressure sensors instead of a mass air flow meter. this way the car will not run rich ( too much fuel ) when you vent off the boost.

2)intake is changing the factory air intake. the air intake is where the engine draws in air. you need 3 things to make power, 1 is air, 2 is fuel, 3 is spark. the factory air intake is designed to be quiet. so its not the best flowing thing compared to a aftermarket one. having an exhuast won't really do much unless you have a intake along with it. so the can inhale and exhale better. but the thing is, the intake will be completely useless if you plan in buyin a turbo kit for the car. cause the parts are not compatiable with each other. so the intake will have to be either thrown away or sold to someone else.

3)a greddy kit does not come with a intercooler. that you have to buy seperate for around 600-800 dollars

4)have no clue what that thumping sound is, but if your talkin about a whistling sound, or a pressure relief sound, then thats from a blow off valve. and only turbo charged cars, or centrifugal type super charged cars can make that sound.

Just stick to leaving your car stock until you know about what an aftermarket item does, or shoot, even a stock item. And street racing is bad, mmmkay

Another thing, be ready to spend hella money. You're probably some kid that saw Fast and the Furious and think you can be just like them. Think again. Street racing is HELLA dangerous. You have to be a really good driver to even THINK about doing anything like that. My advice, tell your friends you were wrong and that you value your life over a stupid bet.

ya, its pretty dumb to do it for that. You should be a car enthusiasts more that enjoys working on your car and for kicks once in a while races.
=P, but seriously, wait 5 months before racing bro, trust me. And practice ur turns and everyhitng, try driving tight curves and everything first. (at the speed limit of course). No one is great at driving fresh out of market, they must be tenderized first...

Now im hungry lol! BASTARD!See!!

Also, stop by www.howstuffworks.com and learn about cars

I recommend you don't race the car. Your parent's aren't buying it for you to race. It's a lot of money and if you come home one night with a blown engine or a busted tranny or the car wraped around a tree. It wouldn't be fun.

And good luck racing in a year. Because don't you have to turn 16 and get your beginners (can only drive with someone with 4 years or more experience). Then have to drive for 8 months to a year before you can drive by yourself?

And don't upgrade your car. Please don't !! learn to properly drive first. If your just wanting to learn to drive to race, then i'm afraid to see you on the road. There are enough people weaving in and out of traffic so they can be the first to the red light.

Also, dont' succumb to peer pressure when peoples lives are on the line. It's not just you that could die if you were to race.

As model girl said, just say your wrong. It's a much much better choice. Would you want to race with a beginning license and get pulled over? Then you could say goodbye to driving for several years.

Here's what you do son...

1. Go to your 'friend' and sock him straight in his grill.

2. Sock him again.

3. Tell him that you won't be st00pid and go around racing when you first learn how to drive. Especially a manual transimission. Thats way too many things to remember at first. First learning the rules and mannerisms of the road... plus the learning of driving stick. No thank you.

4. If your friend has a girlfriend, make some moves on her. Tell her you'll be getting a fly ride when you turn 16. Chicks dig guys who can give them rides.

5. Once you've gained the interest of said girl, repeat step #2.

6. Get your license, car, and enter the world of manhood. By boinking your friends lady! woot!

7. Try not to crash, The Human body is allergic to crashes. It causes us to ... um Die. Totally not cool.

Dont start racing as soon as you start driving, thats asking for something bad to happen. You remind me of the kind of dumbass kid that thinks they got mad skilz when they have been driving for 6 months. Not to be harsh but thats what it seems like to me.

About modifing you car, DON'T! well not yet anyway. Wait untill you reach the point where your car cant do what you want it to. You hopefully wont reach that point untill your 17 or 18.

If you must do something stupid and reckless on the roads do it as far away from people as possible.

Statements above apply in so many ways its not even funny... hell racing an Automatic that soon after getting your license would be retarded. This is CLASSIC, F&F right here. So go with Rednecks advice but add more step before #2. Immeadiately Punch yourself in the face for making such a retarded bet and actually being influenced by hollywood BS racing fable. So for the sake of myself and EVERY other driver on the road and all the trees you could possibly kill by crashing.. just give up this idea of racing before you not only kill yourself but also possibly others too.

hey why are you guys makin me seem like the bad guy here? not fair. but you guys made one interesting point. we love to work on cars more then anything (well maybe except sex) but we go out to race to show ourselves in our tuning or to show our capabilities of our work. so its more like showing off our pride's work and what not. but anyways lets hope that this kid is not dumb like that and go kill himself. i'm sure that he'll have more common sense when he gets older.

I was hoping to see someone give a correct answer on what a blow valve does. yes it vents pressure when the throtle plate closes but do you know why. becuase the turbo is still producing pressure when the throttle is closed so to keep the air from running back into the compressor and causeing a compressor surge in lamine terms keeping the turbo from spinning backwards lol. As far as this kid goes don't be a hyprcrite over half you guys/girls race every fri and saturday just becuase your 17-18 and hes 15 dosent mean its cool for you to race and not him I agree with you all on the saftly aspect but hes going to do it anyway the best you guys can do is help if he has ?s about his car etc etc i garuntee thier are atlest 13-14 of you here that got into racing by watching the first F&F and thats ok you have to find out about it somewhere if thats where you found it then cool welcome to the club lol dont judge it's not your place he could grow up and be the next RJ devera or Stephen PaPadakis and you will be asking for his signiture.later

Or we can all read in the newspaper how he killed a pregnant woman with her 2 other kids in her car when he decided to race his friend and they all ended up dead. Wow I can't wait to get his autograph while they cart him away on the stretcher. This is why insurance is so high for young males..

First of all, please use some more punctuation.. that way more people would want to read what the hell you just wrote. Thanks.

And because I'm 18 and have a bit more experience than he does, it would be cooler for me to race than he. He can't drive stick, doesn't even know what an intake is. He should learn a lot more before he decides to be Stephen PaPadakis.

And F&F is so god damn dumb. Made me actually want to not like cars anymore. eek.
