And I only got one reply heh. You guys suck.

I'm building a turbo setup for my 2001 V6. Using a Garrett AiResearch T-3 from an old Mercedes 5 cyllinder Turbodiesel. The thing pumps yo. Got it for 40 bucks, and in it's condition right now it's worth 250 at least. Pick 'n' Pull is awesome . It's a ricer's dream. The stock wastegate should be more than fine for a twin turbo set-up... But a blowoff valve will be absolutely MANDATORY, because the piece of junk puts out 500CFM's at 17PSI. Insane.

If you are going to turbo your car, here are some guidlines. If it's a 305-350 or whatever, the stock engine can probably handle 5 or 6 PSI without any real problems. Intercooling is a necessary evil, because turbocharged air runs STUPID hot.... Running a turbo at maximum boost for 6 seconds will cause the air in the intake to be 16 or so degrees celsius hotter than ambient air in the engine compartment. When the air is hotter in the intake, it will cause there to be less actual air per cubic inch than colder air...which in turn causes loss of performance. And hot air can cause problems.

If you want to run a lot of boost, then be prepared for a long, arduous, and EXPENSIVE job. Only expect to run about 6 PSI, because any more will require some modifications. Forged connecting rods, lower compression pistons, possibly a new intake manifold, and if you're going into the 2 atmosphere region, possibly a new crankshaft. Be prepared to reprogram the ECM, or get a new chip, dunno what year F-body you got. New injectors, new mass air flow sensor, O2 simulators, maybe a new throttle body, new or modified exhaust manifolds, new exhaust from the front to the back. If you can't run a dual exhaust setup, then I'd recommend an X-pipe set-up. (would be nice to know what kind of camaro you have :P) Hmmm, what else.

Oh yeah, Turbos. You'll have to know what you want. All turbos are different, some are good for high volume, low boost...low volume high boost... high volume high boost...and INSANE volume and even more insane boost. You need to know if you want a Twin Turbo setup, or just a single turbo. Twin turbo is easier to work with in terms of application, but you get 2 turbos, then you're dealing with twice the amount of air going in to your inake manifold. instead of 500CFM at 10 PSI, you're dealing with 1000 CFM at 10 PSI!. That could be enough to turn a seemingly mild mannered connecting rod into a crankcase destroying nightmare. I'm only going to run a single turbo on my system untill I have the time, money, and patience to rework my engine. My ultimate goal is 600 HP and a completely balanced engine capable of 9000R's.

Headers are a good choice, but not really a necessity. It's great because you get the best exhaust flow, but it can get REALLY expensive and an engineering nightmare making custom turbo headers. I'm just going to modify a set of manifolds off another v-6 camaro and run it that way. I'll keep ya'all posted on my progress as it goes...with pictures maybe too

Good luck with your project too. Some specs next time would be nice.

And this is all off the top of my head, I'm not sure if everything is accurate, but it doesn't matter because regardless, it's not gonna be cheap

your MAF sensor would be fine. A turbo does not increse the amount of air that your motor pumps. A turbo is a pressure multiplier not a pressure adder. Think of it like taking all the air in the room that your are sitting in right now ( just for the sake of numbers lets say 800 CFM) and stuffing it into a soda can. It's still 800 CFM just in a smaller space. On my GN air is measured before my turbo. SMC alky kit IMO is a must for any turbo car. with that kit I run 24 PSI on 93 octane. no knock. A blow off valve is not mandatory. the whole compressor surge thing is not as big of a deal as people think. Ive been running mine for 3 years and not too many GN's have them and they run fine for a long time. But it will be expensive none the less. Good

If the turbo produces more boost than your engine can handle, (like the set-up I'm going to run) then you'll need a blow-off valve. If I ran 24PSI into my engine I'd send my manifold into orbit. And a turbo DOES change the amount of air your motor pumps. Not displacement, but density of air per charge. And more air means more gas. I'm prolly wrong on the MAF, was just something told to me. I'm not exactly sure what it does either..doesn't it judge the amount of air going into the manifold for the computer to control the fuel/air mixture?

Is the GN 3.8 similar to the 3800 Series 2? Cuz I'd like to know what I'm in store for when turboing my car. Like ideal compression ratio, timing..etc.

ok I think your getting blow off valve and wastegate mixed up. A blow off valve releaves pressure when you let off the gas and a wastegate bleeds off exaust gas to controll your turbo. and yes your are right to an extent, a turbo does not up the cfm that your motor will flow t just puts more air in that 600 cfm. It's a weird concept but I work at caterpillar and I do air flow testing on cat motors. (well interning there) I could not beleve that a turbo does not increase your motors CFM just the volume of air in that CFM untill I saw the tests. the flow bench showes the same CFM for both the N/A motor and the Turbo motor.

I'm not shure about the L98 (turbo 3.8) similarty to the 3800. The 3800 probabally has higher compression but other than that im not shure

this is a little off topic(sorry) but bmr fabrication is working on a nasty turbo setup for a z28...massive turbo, air to liquid intercooler, and a SB2 nascar engine.

Yup, it's pretty cool. There's alot broader base of knowledge on this board than .net's. You can find anything on AF
