Question Gear oil Question

hey i have a 91 gs with the 1.8. I put a diff trany in it and it was almost out of gear oil but worked fine for testing around the block. Then i put some in it and now when you put it in first it clunks in but doesnt try to jerk just grinds clunks ??? It only does it putting it into first gear from a stop other than that it shifts fine and goes into every other gear fine just when you put in first from a stop. First gear works fine no slipping no jerking its just when you put it into first from a stop . What kinda gear oil is recomended i put in light weight oil and thats when it started thank in advance !!
