Drain all of the fluid out of the gear box by removing the drain plug on the back side of the tranny. The recommended gear oil is 75W90, according to the repair manual. The fill plug is located on the front side of the tranny about 3/4 of the way down. You will need a long flexible hose to fill it from above. It takes just over 2 quarts to fill it.

My 2001 model is also manual and got about 70K miles. I don't recall the manual calling out I have to replace the gear lubricant every so often. Neither did I see a dipstick to check its quantity. What is good preventive maintenance practice for the gear lubricant replacement? How often should I replace it? My driving are mostly local (below 50 mph) with many stop and go.
