Question about right of way..
This sort of seems off topic but I couldn't find a close enough forum for asking this question. Anyway I'm a new driver and I have read the DMV manual and studied alot of things, however I'm stuck on one thing in my mind.
Here's a quick illustration I made: Basically, I'm turning left and from my perspective the other car is turning right. What the DMV manual says is: When turning left yield to oncoming vehicles and vehicles turning right. Now think about it this way though, look at the other persons perspective. In his perspective he is turning left and I am turning right. So my question is, who gets to go first? |

It basically depends on the situation at hand. Whoever gets to the stop sign first should get the right of way. But if you both are at the stop sign at the same time its hard to say. In that situation I usually just wave the person on to go ahead and go. It takes a lot of the frustration out the situation. You can only learn a limited amount from the book and student driving time. I learned the most in the first year i had my license. What to do and what not to do. You learn from your mistakes, but hopefully those will just be minor errors that don't damage or hurt anyone. Good luck with everything. I hope this helped some.

I think when the DMV manual says yield to cars "turning right", it is the actual action taken by the drivers.
because when you make a left turn, and your oncoming traffic is making a right turn, they are going into the same direction as you are, so you will have to yield to them to clear out a safe distance between you and others vehicles so you can make a safe turn. From the picture, both of you are making left turns. In that case, I believe there is enough room for both of you to turn at the same time. If there isn't, usually the person who gets to the intersection first has the right of way. But to be safe, you can always yield to other vehicles. Also, when you make a left-turn on a one-lane traffic like that, always be cautious about cars coming out behind the vehicle thats also trying to make a left turn. There are always people who just don't want to stop and wait. And that is illegal! (at least in Calfiornia) |

Waving another driver on - If you wave another driver on, and that driver hits another car that you didn't see, it is entirely YOUR FAULT! I never wave another driver on. Do be careful with this. If you wave someone on, an accident happens, and you leave. You'll be in deep shit if the popo finds you!
