Unhappy 97 GPGT hesitation, bogging down on accelleration

First, the car has 75,000 mi. on it and runs very well. The only “major” repairs have been a battery and an alternator change.

My problem seems to me to be either an electrical or transmission one. Sometimes (time of day and/or temperature does not seem to matter), the car will hesitate upon acceleration when accelerating either from a stop or up a hill. It also bogs down a bit when cruising at moderate speeds (40-50 mph.) It seems that when this happens it feels like either it’s starving for fuel/air or it’s slipping in the transmission. It’s hard to tell which. The RPM’s rise a bit but not much. The car starts/idles well.

Now, my question is. Has anyone had similar problems? Has anyone any suggestions on what to check to try to improve the situation? I don’t want to start throwing parts at it as all I really need is an idea as to what to tell the shop so I don’t get ripped off with a lot of replacing of parts that I can replace myself.

Thanks.

#EDIT#

New problem today. As I was driving to work this morning, when I stepped on the brakes there was a weird clicking sound coming from just under the dash. It felt like the ABS was trying to engage as the trac light came on and the brakes would feel like they were grabbing then releasing like I had really stomped on the brakes even though I was travelling 10-15 mph and braking lightly. Any Ideas on this problem gents?

Thanks

I think its time for a tune up! New plugs and wires buddy. And either buy a new air filter or clean your K & N.

I've got a 94 GTP with the same prob. I've never felt anything like it before, there's the slight surging when accelerating, and there's also a rattling type feeling when going up a hill or going a constant 50-60, as if going over a bunch of small bumps or something. It feels like it's starving for air/fuel, but I kinda doubt if it's a tranny problem. I've changed the air/fuel filters, plugs (not wires), ran fuel system cleaner through, and had injectors cleaned, but that didn't do it. I've looked some other places and there were several cases where it was the O2 sensor(s).

Any thoughts?

lag

i'm not sure exactly what's going on for you and really haven't had a problem like that but just help in the brainstorm, a thrasher shift kit might help with soft accelleration..as for the small bumps you might check your tires or their allignment...

The bog you are experiencing at 40-50mph is normal for GPs. The DHP PCM will pretty much take care of that. For more info, do a search on www.clubgp.com for “lag”.

Re: 97 GPGT hesitation, bogging down on accelleration

What was the remedy for the problem portz97 had wrt his trac light and the ABS? I have been having that problem every once in a while where I am slowing to a stop at a light and the trac light comes on and it feels like the abs is engaging in a sort of pulse-braking action. I wasn't losing traction because the ground was dry and I wasn't breaking excessively... Any ideas?

I have this same exact problem. It's not that big of a deal, mines been doing it for a while. My best guess is a bad wheel speed sensor component of the ABS. Mine happens when I hit a bump and the sensor gets jarred, thinking the wheel has stopped, and applies the ABS.

Re: 97 GPGT hesitation, bogging down on accelleration

I believe mine doesn't even need to take a bump to start doing that. I did hit a bump this evening, however, and at the next stoplight about a quarter of a mile down the road, it started doing the same thing as I mentioned before. At the next stoplight, I turned the car off and then restarted it and at the next stoplight, it didn't do it! I think my car has become somewhat like my computer!

its a wheel bearing going bad. If your abs light comes on with the check tires light. mine was coming on here and there. little bumps would set it off. I left it like that for about 4 months+ but on my drive to arizona it stayed on. I have a 97 and I didnt know what the problem was until the pass-side started to humm. I replaced and never had a problem since.
check it out.

Also it would just go off out of no where too toward the end of its life.

A friend of mine was a GM mechanic and he cleaned the grime off of my wheel sensor without replacing it and the surging of the brakes stopped.
