Easy...

Get the front clip (or the engine and tranny) from a '97-'01 Mirage with a 1.8L and swap it out. The mounts are the same, just the engine is bigger.

Engine

You're talking about boring out the engine to 1.8L. I don't think that's possible. I believe (<--- stressed heavily) that you can overbore a 1.5 to 1.6L, but I am not sure, never heard it done. I know that it would be dangerous to bore to 1.8L though, because the cylinder walls would be too thin to handle the internal pressures caused by the combustion within the engine.

You could probably mount the 1.8L head onto the 1.5L bottom end, though I don't know what that would accomplish.

Personally, I would buy a new bottom end from a 1.8L to be safe.

Yeah the most you can bore out the 4g15 block is to about 1.6L. Also you can not put a 1.8L (4g93) head onto a 1.5L (4g15) block. The block itself if in a different family. Heres some of what I have learned about mitsu engine codes: Example- 4G15 4=4 cylinder, G=Gas, 1=block family, 5= 5th variation of the engine. So using this info you can see that the 1.8L head cant go onto the 1.5L block since they are in different families. Which would actually be an advantage since the 1.8L has 4 more valves (16v) then the 1.5L...too bad it wont go. I'm by no means an expert, so if there is anything wrong with what I said, i dont think there is, please correct me.

You're right...

drinkthesand:

I checked up on the idea of swapping the 1.5L head for the 1.8L head. You're right, that's a no go.

sthug423:

The bore out thing is 'safe' up to 1.6L (RPW bores it out to 1630cc in it's Stage 2 option), after that you risk rupturing the cylinder walls... leaving you with another huge chunk of recycleable metal.

I still say buy another 1.8L bottom end. You already said that the one you have is shot. Then you'll have a 1.8L engine that you can play around with and have confidence that it won't go bust on you again.

glad i could help some...

... if you're looking for a good lead on getting the parts go to www.woodfins.com. you could also call them at 1-888-883-4466, Ext. 236, or you can email the sales people at [email protected]. these guys have good deals, you can get the bottom at three different mileage ratings: low, average, and high. they can ship it to you or a shop and they include a one-year warranty. check them out, you may save a little money.
