Question CRX swap NO cooling fan

I swap has been running fine for over two years then i notice the gauge started running hotter then normal. Normal being below the middle about a 1/3 of the guage. Well now when i sit in traffic the guage climbs up slowly to 3/4 and i popped the hood to look at the cooling fan. there is nothing happening. I have been thru the entire motor looking for the problem. I have changed all the sensors and the themo switch on the back of the block it's all new. When i jumper the wires together the fan comes on. Or if i go to the relay and poke it with a test light the fan go's on. But if i poke it again right away with a test light it does not go on. I need to wait about two minutes and poke the relay wire again and it will come on. Something is up! How do i tell if the relays or relay is bad. I would assume the themo switch sends a closed circuit to the relay. But maybe the resistance is not enough to trip the relay. Could someone tell me if they have had the same problem. Thanks

to check the relay, replace it with another from the same car. As long as the relay's connector prongs are facing the same direction, its the same type of relay, so just sit in your driveway, and steal a relay from something else that you know works for a few minutes, and plug it in the fan relay spot, see if it works.

if you cant figure out the problem, just do what i did and hook your fan up to a toggle switch inside the car

Thumbs up

Hi,

Well the relay was part of the problem. I wired a bosch relay instead of the matuba crap. The fan comes on now but it has to get above the water marker on the gauge is there another relay in the set of four that i could also change out? To the guy who said to wire the toggle switch that will work but it's a pain in the A** So after i solve my problem i will send you a easy wiring diagram so you can fix your car also. I'm sure it's the same problem. It was perfect now the temp needle is all over the place. Up and down. Something else is weird that leads me to believe it's a another relay also is. When i shut the car off they turn the ignition back to the on position. The needle drops to halfway on the temp gauge and the fan kicks on for awhile. I think there is another relay that is giving me problems i will check the others tomorrow. Thanks for the input. I will get to the bottom of the problem then i will post it.

Thanks

2 things it could be. One, which would explain the crazy needle, would be the coolant temperature sensor might be dead or fucked up giving you weird readings. It is located on the side of the block under the distributor. It tells your guage inside when the car is up to temp.

Second on the back of the block is the thermoswitch. When the coolant gets hot enough there is a bi-metallic strip that makes contact and sends power to the fan relays. You can easily jump this since it has 2 connections on it, just put a wire between the 2 connections that plug into it and see what happens.

If not have you checked your coolant? How new is it? Maybe flush it out.

Other thing is since you did replace the thermo swith allready, you may have got it at like auto zone (not known for quality parts), it may be a differnt temp setting causing it to heat up more. Or maybe you over heated the motor when the relay did not work and you possibly did some damage not to ginks you but a possiblity.

well i changed out the coolant temp sensor on the head it's brand NEW and the thermoswitch is also brand new if you jump the wires the fan comes on. I have since then made a new relay in place of the existing relay and the fan does come on. It's just higher then normal. Is the thermoswitch from a D16 the same temp rating as the B16 maybe the temps are slighty different that would explain why it comes on later.

Also the coolant it NEW i have done a complete flush of the system. And all the sensors are new. Is there more then on e relay that ties into the fan. There are another two that are in the same area. And i diffent on the is the A/C relay. But the wiring is different on the A/C verses the other three. I have already replaced of them the fam does work. It just needs to get hotter then normal to kick on. Also all the parts are factory Honda parts i don't use auto zone parts been there done that and paid dearly for it! YIKES Also the car has never been overheated it's been hot but never to hot that would damage the motor it needs to be 240 to 260 degree to start damage. It's been 215 degrees tops

Thanks

All fixed it was the fan relay i took it apart and sanded the contact with a little tiny peice of sandpaper and solder on a new resistor. It like new again it works perfect.

Thanks for all the input!

Peace
