Modeling Terminology

There seem to have a lot of question on what certain terms mean, so here is a thread where we shall add what the meaning is to certain terms related to modeling and even the forum in general!

Add anything appropriate with a written definition.. I'll start by adding a few off the top of my head..

FLASH - Excess/unwanted plastic that is attached to parts/trees.

ORANGE PEEL - Paint condition where the surface resembles the skin of an orange.

LHS - acronym for Local Hobby Shop.

CURBSIDE - Model kit that has no engine detail besides what is shown on the underside/chassis.

IMO - acronym for In My Opinion.

FYI - acronym for For Your Information.

Go ahead and add or even add to/correct what I've/others will add!

Curbside is as a car is seen on the "curb". As such there is not a requirement for any underside detail. An example are most 1/43 kits which have a flat chassis plate on the bottom and nothing but a tail pipe extension out the back. All doors, hood, trunk etc.. closed.

as soon as you open a door etc.. it is no longer curbside even if there is no engine.

HLJ - Hobby Link Japan (www.hlj.com)
HS - HobbySearch (www.1999.co.jp)

Slammed/dropped - lowering a car's stance front and back, usually very low, with suspension modifications
Chopped - Lowering the height of the roof by shortening the A, B, C and sometimes D pillars
A pillar - post between the windshield and door window
B pillar - post between front door window and rear side window
C pillar - post between rear side window and back glass
D pillar - basically only used with station wagons
Channelled - Lowering a car's beltline by taking out a thin section of the body all around the car.
Sectioned - shortening a car by taking out a vertical section anywhere along the car.
Frenched - Recessing or flush-fitting something that normally sticks out.
Smoothed/shaved - Removing door handles, water drip rails, etc that stick out the side of the body.
etc., etc.

TS - Tamiya Spray. Tamiya's spray paints are designated with both a name and a number (eg "TS-30 Silver Leaf")
X - Designation for Tamiya bottles of paint, both acrylic and enamel (eg X - 1 Gloss Black)
XF - Similar to 'X', but for their flat paint lineup (eg XF-1 Flat Black)

Styrene - used to fabricate your own parts, basically bulk plastic. Can be bought at any hobby shop.

That's all for now........
