Just a crazy idea... but crazy enough, it just might work?
Well, I was screwing around with my CRX the other day, removing some of the AC components, when I got to the compressor... kinda got me thinking about belt-driven compressed air... sounds alot like a super-charger doesn't it?
Anyways, has anyone ever tried to use their AC compressor as a mini supercharger? Would it even work? I think it'd be interesting to find out...

sounds crazy enough to work try it out worse to worse nothing happens but you could end getting blown if you pull it off
I said getting blown

Re: Just a crazy idea... but crazy enough, it just might work?
i dont think it will work for one main reason, it doesnt push enough volume. your engine probably sucks more air on its own. the size of the intake and exhaust piping on a compressor is something like 3/4" and 1/4", and your intake is at least 2". thats a huge difference, but i guess anything is worth a try. its a lot of work though

Aaahhh!!!
Agreed, not enough volume, but what if you attached a pipe from your aircon to you intake...
COLD AIR...!!!!! Maybe worth a try... |

Well, what if the compressor was plummed into the intake pipe? So that way, the engine is still pulling air through the intake filter, but there's some extra air being forced in as well? That probably wouldn't work either, unless maybe the line was plummed right in next to the TB or something...

![]() It makes me curious, I'll admit..but you'd think that people would have found out how to do it by now, right? I think you should try it. I've got an extra compressor lying around the house, I might just give it a shot...

Nope... still wouldn't work, because the intake manifold would still only be taking in as much air as it needs... when it's pulling more air, it's just going to get it from the closest source available, but air pressure still wouldn't be any higher than what it's supposed to be drawing cause either the flow of air would back wash out of the air intake, or when the engine was drawing more air, what it couldn't get from the hose connected to the a/c compressor, it would just pull in from the intake pipe..
see what I mean?

i think the benefits gained will be outweighed by the draw of the compressor.

At the refinery I worked at, there was a vacuum device attached to a barrel that we used to vacuum up serious dirt. It ran off of compressed air.
There was a nozzle inside a pipe. Compressed air line was hooked up to the nozzle which sprayed pressurized air through the pipe. This air squirting through the pipe created the vacuum which SUCKED other air in, which ran the device. No moving parts, either. If you could stick a nozzle shooting compressed air into the intake, it would create MORE vacuum (I know it sounds like you're violating the laws of physics, creating vacuum by squirting pressurized air) inside the intake, and suck more air through the filter into the engine. I doubt it would work with the AC components, because they have to be very, very clean, plus they need some oil circulation. That oil would just get sucked into the engine, and the compressor would be toasted very quickly... Work on it. Find a nozzle that you could run inside the CAI pipe. I do think there's a valuable idea that's do-able with the components most of us have just laying around. Flunky |

people do that for air ride suspension

Yeah, we all agree that the volume would not be enough, but what about leading the cold air from your aircon to your throttle body, maybe not more air, but COLDER air...

![]() As for the hooking an a/c hose that would normally go inside the car and cool the car off inside up to the intake manifold piping... the air coming out of the a/c hose wouldn't be cold enough to make any real difference, as opposed to the 30-40hp your a/c compressor would be sapping off the engine to run itself. One option would be some type of air expansion valve like the a/c system uses to create the actual cold air. But with that, you'd need some kind of oil charge running inside the system to keep the air running smoothly through the expansion valve without clogging or over heating... which that couldn't be good to shoot an oil charge like that into the intake manifold, now would it? But even with this, you're getting closer to the idea of just using an NČO kit.
