guys i need info on gst's pls

long ass post but pls pls read

hey everyone how's it going.
i am a student at the university of arizona and i am in desperate need of a car. the eclipse seems to be a perfect combination of looks and performance for the money.
the problem is that i am a bit short on cash (arent we all) and i would propably buy a modded car cause if i buy it stock i will spend twice as much to build it the way i want and i will never stop spending.
i have heard many horror stories about crank walk and i would like you to share a bit of info with me. i have checked the vfaq site and read it for hours but i am so lost in there
i have found a couple of eclipse completely set up (bodykits, wheels interior) in which i am interested in but i am worried about the engine.
i have decided to buy one that has a swapped engine (95 gst with 97 engine with ~40k miles) but that doesnt guarantee no crank walk. along with the mods are fmic, bigger turbo, bov,i/h/e and such)
i am flying there to pick the car up and i wonder if it will do a 1000-1500 mile trip with no probs. Also, what must i check once i get there in order to be sure that there's nothing wrong with the car? i love cars and i will treat it as my girlfriend or something but is that engine modded to about 300-350hp at the crank reliable for daily driving and a couple of occasional trips a year? (1000 mile ones)
Also,is there a chance that a rebuilt engine still has the crank walking problem? how about engines with aftermarket internals, do they last more than stock engines if not hard driven?
i know eveything is so scrambled up but i havent slept for 30 hours now and i am half drunk so try to get something out of it )
this is a huge ass post and i propably wont get a reply for every question so pls guys try answering as much as you can
thnx in advance for your time and i am looking forward for your answer.
oh i am in love with that car!!!!!

All 2g engines can potentially crankwalk, that means any engine built after 95 (late 94). To try and start answering all your questions:

First the car should handle the trip fine if it is running well, no coolant leaks, oil leaks, etc etc. If you keep it in good shape it can handle as many miles as you can put on it.

300-350 horsepower is fine as a daily driver, mine is over 400 with no complaints

Stronger internals do not prevent crankwalk, as the problem stems from low oil pressure the the crank thrustbearing. As the bearing wears out the crank sloshes side to side and eventually destroys the engine.

A 97 engine is no less susceptible to crankwalk than a 95, trust me, I've got a 97 and mine walked at 120K.

I think that covers everything, just one thing kind've fyi, our turbo cars don't have headers, they have manifolds.

Hope this helps

As for the durability of the car, i would give it a ok, i have a 97 spyder gst with 110,000 miles (7 bolt motor) with all bolt on's(boost controller, intake, 3 inch turbo back etc). turbo is stock with all 110,000 miles used by be and i go 70 miles one way to and from work. All i ever had to replace majorly was a water pump($600)/ 2 clutches $500 each. I run my car very hard each and every day rain or sun. The car will last if its not leaking, smoking, taken care of. Just make sure the car runs with no noticeable problems and youve got yourself a good car. As for taking trips..Well i cant go into california because if i get pulled over than ill be in the same boat as you. Lookin for a new car. Almost everything i have in my car is illegal in cali heh. So I keep my butt in Phoenix and take the Tahoe out for trips. But all in all if the motor was at least changed with oil on time and timeing belts replaced youre going to be fine. Now GET SOME SLEEP..!!!

wow thanks a lot guys. this forum seems way too friendly, i like it
what is this about 5-6-7 bold engines i dont seem to get it
and what if the crank walks, can it be fixed by changing crank and bearings and all? what if aftermarket crank is there?
oh and, if i take it to a shop that really know their stuff would they be able to predict the early stages of this?

hmmm, wow you're from phoenix? c00l what is all that about california i dont get it, what if everything is illigal about the car, will they take it away or something? dont they just cut you a ticket or something?
(dont really know the way things work around here i've only been in the states for a few months and i'm from greece and the my first trip will be at cali)

oh and, what are a few things i have to look for when i go see the car, i mean, stuff that can check out my self like weird noises or stuff like that?Another thing that's troubling me is when i bring the car to arizona and have to get it smogged and registered or whatever, i dont think modded cars pass smog right? i've heard that the authorities in az dont give a damn about modding the cars but a smog is still a smog.

thnx a lot guys i really appreciate your time and tolorance

Well to start off with the illegal parts in cali. My bov says on the box"not legal in california highways EVER." for race purposes only" Also they have a decible level your exhaust can sound. So if you have a loud exhaust, you might be pulled over.and so being that my bov is LOUD I aint riskin getting my car taken. Im not sure of all the rules and regulations of cali. But I know they have the TOUGHEST rules and regs on moddified cars. And you need to stop being paranoid about crankwalk bro. If your that worried then dont get the clipse. cause chances are you think think think crankwalk, chances are your the 10% of people who actually do get it =(. Signs to look for when you buy the car. Well thats only common sence. Does it start up smooth, clutch is nice and easy, revs nicely, drives ok, etc. Yeah you have to pass emissions in AZ. But as long as you have a tune up and a cat your gunna pass ok.

Like aves911, I have 400 whp on pump gas, the car has 170k miles, and I am pefectly fine that this is my only car But I am now on a 6 bolt nad built tranny. I drive 35k miles per year, and make up to 300 drag runs per season. Not that i havent broken anything, but it has all been within reason, given the cars daily life. Also, far less than 10% of 2Gs crankwalk. Its a very small figure, but the onesthat get it spread the word quickly enough You can have the end play measured by any decent shop, see the sticky I put up in the DSM section at www.rackingknowledge.org. After all the info you could ever want about CW, there is an explanation on both ways of measuring end play. You want the one that doesnt involve removing the oil pan.

Check that there is no smoking, check the shaft wobble on the turbo as well and thrust play, try to see if there is oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil (though it can be hard to tell sometimes). Make sure the clutch works as one should. If these things check out, it should be fine for a long trip.

The name of the motor comes from the number of bolts that hold the flywheel to the end of the crank. The 90-92 6 bolt motors had 6 bolts, but after the crank design was changed (among other things) there were 7 bolts. This is how you tell them apart (there is also a vfaq that shows the dfference in the oil pan). People have long tried to change hte crank and bearings. Sometimes it works, most often it doesnt.
