IN CA
Engine Swaps are legal, with strict requirements 1. engine must be newer then the car it's going into 2. engine must have all of the smog equipement from the doner car hooked up, including all sensors, cat or mulitpule cats, etc. 3. after the swap, you must take the car to a smog referee to have the a refereee approved sticker placed on the car. Otherwise your new engine will not pass visual inspection in CA for normal smog. Furthermore, if it's obd2 the computer will automatically know that this is the wrong car. So the ref inspection and approval is essential. Unless you get some smog tech who is brainless or doesn't care. For intakes and exhausts, the rule is that anything before or in front of the cat must be CARB (CA Air Resource Board) (or something like that) legal. This means the intake, headers, or the high flow cat that you might be thinking about. Like DC headers are CARB approved, i think. So that would be OK to fit. Anything after the cat does not require CARB legal products. |

Hey spender1326 can you clarify on #3 a little. I mean where would you go to see a smog referee. Also a shop out in Monterey Park, CA told me I would have to take it to CHP and they would "Blue Tag" the engine. Is this what you are talking about or is it something completely diff. Thanks for the info. I will look into this cuz i wanted to get a GSR engine but did not know if it would be street legal. ^^^To no-townhustla if you stick to products that boast a carb sticker on them like spender1326 said you will be fine. There are a lot of companies that are offering this option like AEM, DC, XS Engineering, Greddy, etc. so w/ a little research you can find what you want. Remember though, if it doesnt have the sticker, badge, paperwork, or whatever stating that its CARB legal then it aint no matter what the seller says.

My information came from 2 sources. The first is a web site that I can't remember. The second is from a guy that works at a muffler shop who knows of the subject. The web site owner placed a B18c1 into a civic and had to take it to a smog referee, run by the state of CA. From what I remember you have to go through the DMV or something to get their number. They went through the engine bay and made sure that ll the sensors were hooked up and all smog equipment were installed according to the helm manual that came with the donor car (for engine hookups) and for the present car (for chassis hookups). Next they did a sniffer test. After it passed both phases then it was given a sticker in the door jam (I think) that said basically this car was legal with that engine in it. I'm not sure that a CHP could do the same thing. But if you have info or know where a chp could confirm the engine swap, that's even better (less time/money), let me know how it's done. I'm thinking about a B18c5 or a h22 euro r spec into a 94 teg. Oh by the way I've also heard that as long as you can pass the initial inspection you should be ok. The guys a inline 4 in garden grove said that the sniffer part of the inspection is a pain but you can get away with passing it by hooking up 3 cats. And it's legal, referree don't care. Although that would really have shitty performance, so I would suggest having a performance exhaust for normal driving and have a 3 cat exhaust in storage to be used every 2 years for smog. |

Almost anything you have the money for can be purchased street legal- just have to do the research. Turbo kits, headers, exhaust, most of the big things that are checked. How much power do you want and what route do you want to take NA or Turbo. You could also do some forum and internet searches to get info. on what power ratings you will get with whatever route you take with a specific engine. Doing searches will give you far more info. than I can personally give- I'm new to alot of these things too as far as detailed engine questions go.
Hey spender1326 so if I talk to the right people would they give me a list or something that I can "check off" to make sure I am not missing anything. Also I guess I will question them in more detail about the exhaust passing- but do you know if I could keep my stock 95 ex coupe exhaust from the cat-back w/ the gsr engine. Also how do you hook up 3 cats I have never seen this, would it be a simple bolt-on so that it is easy to take off and put back on. I know where inline 4 is so I will probably hit them up for some info too. |

Yeah, anything back of the cat is beyond smog emission regulations. So your exhaust is fine. As far as the 3 cat are concerned, it's just an ugly patch for your stock exhaust that any muffler shop can do with welder. It ain't pretty or good for your engine, but it will get your emissions clean. I haven't seen it for my self, just heard it from inline 4. But I imagine it's just sticking a cat anywhere the pipe is somewhat straight. In fact if your emissions is really bad, I wonder how many cats you can fit under the car. |
