Custom exhaust system and cold air intake

I was recently given an 88' Honda Civic DX (5 speed, 1.5L, ...). One of the few things wrong with it is a totally rusted muffler. I figure if I'm going to replace the muffler I might as well give fab'ing a custom cat back exhaust a shot! So my question is... what is the best type of muffler that is cheap and quiet. I want the cheapest, quietest muffler I can find. Any links to suppliers for mufflers and other exhaust parts (tubing ...)?

Also do you have any suggestions on what to make the intake out of (aluminum, pvc...). I am thinking pvc because its easily obtainable and easy to work with... also what type of filter? Should I just use some generic cone filter? (car is not k&n worthy! lol)

This car is just going to be a daily driver... I want it to be quiet and not have that trademark dying cat sound coming from the exhaust... Also im just doing the cold air intake to build up my skills before I do it for real on my real car!

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Jared

Re: Custom exhaust system and cold air intake

i'm not sure what you ment by doing up a cold air intake to build up your skills before you do it for real...maybe you can go into further detail so we can better understand what it is you are doing and/or trying to accomplish

as for the exhaust, you can go to a muffler shop and they can hook you up with a universal muffler. most people go the glass pack route with either a stock tailpipe or a larger one. the larger size will give more sound but not by much.

By "building up my skills before i do it for real" I meant that i just wanted to try to build one (a CAI) on this car to get some experience so when I do it for real (on my good car) It'll look nice and work well. Thanks for your input and sorry for the misunderstanding!

Back in the day we made an intake for my Isuzu (mini). We used a three inch 45-degree rubber elbow & a piece of 3" pvc pipe with a generic K&N style filter. Total cost: about $30 & it worked pretty good...

there was another thread very similiar going on the past couple of days

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=139563

the style that both gta & myself posted up were made from combining dx & si stock intake tubes. i'm sure it's not hp proven like AEM however, it does allow you to ditch the stock airbox and use an air filter. in gta's case he used a nicer K&N filter. it was propably more efficent than my ghetto filter (LoL)
