Hi there,
Guys, this one is not a hard core automotive enthusiast's question, please just take a sec to reply if you have any info: I need a roof rack to carry 3 pairs of skis over 400 miles. I found a relatively cheap ($80) snap-on rack (not sure of the manufacturer) that consists of two transverse plastic harnesses with rubber feet that can be attached to the roof via spring-loaded hooks). I am concerned that it may not be strong enough for highway speeds and will eventually fly off into somebody's windshield (and beyond). Can anybody voice an opinion or recommend something good at under $100 in ski-carriers? I do not have any manufacturer-installed rack on my car. Thanks, Len |

Yakima Lift Ticket 4 - $89
fits on a Q Tower (with beam) - $79 Thule Flat Top 4 - $69 Thule Snow Cat - $119 My brother is living proof that a YAK rack can do at least 110 without coming off. I would assume that number is probably a lot higher depending on how the skis or boards are attached. My point is you get what you pay for. These are the two top brands in the US for a reason. Go to google and see what you can find, I just did a very basic search. BTW, Thule is pronounced too-lee |

Thank you for writing,
I did a search on Google already. Of course, Thule and Yakima are the top brands and the most expensive ones, too. My points is to get something cheaper, lighter and easier to dismount (as I do not plan to drive around with the rack all the time, plus I do not even need it except for skis, every now and then). I am still curious if anyone knows how reliable these racks are, i.e., how fast can one go safely. Thanks again, Len |

well, to answer that part of the question, yes, they ought to be fine. It is your final call though. By means of comparison, a magnetic pizza delivery car top unit car do 80+ with just four magnets and is far less aerodynamic. If you are clamping (as it were) the ski rack to your top door sills (not sure what to call the edge there) with locking mechanisms, I imagine it will be fine at much higher speeds. Go for it
a brand name on the cheap unit you want may help feedback

Thanks for posting this. I need to look into a rack for skis myself. This'll help out a lot.
