sean price

that other thread got closed so basically i'll give you your choices in the languge i speak - simple

crx models available to you

si-most power, options that sort of thing, just might cost you a little more and not be as good on gas, but still good, i find they have the best aftermarket support as well

dx-little less power, i own one, good all around car, its available in auto as well

hf- very high fuel economy, no power, no bells and whistles.

the down sides to these cars is there all 2 seaters, there non too fast and it takes a fair chunk of cash to get them fast. there fairly reliable, but they will most likely burn or leak a little oil by 200k, only to last for a good 100 more k,

oh, and one more thing, your hatch is going to squeek like a mother fucker.

anything else you wanna know about theses cars go right ahead and ask
the people on this thing know incredible amounts about theses cars and have been there to help me out of a jam, but sometimes they go over my head. most times.

Thumbs down

actually..........
as far as crx's go:
the si and the hf have the same motor basically. the hf is basically the si in sheeps clothing. it is the dx body with the si motor. so calling the hf weak and the si strong is pure ignorance.

next time riceriderjade can you please think up a less personal title. messages that are directed at 1 person have been locked lately. i won't lock this thread because you were going in a legit direction with it.

spoolinLSVTEC i agree and disagree. the hf doesn't have the same intake mani. the 88-89 isn't MPFI.. it's the 90-91. i also seem to remeber the hf having a different engine code. anyone happen to know for sure (as in a HF owner ) here's some specs differences...

CRX SI:
d16a6
-1590cc
-9.1:1 compression ratio
Power: 108 bhp @ 6000
Redline: 7100 rpm
Torque: 100 lb-ft @ 5000

CRX HF:
D15B6 (is this correct?)
-1493cc
-9.1:1 compression ratio
*88-89 Power: 62 bhp @ 4500
*90-91 Power:70 bhp @ 4500
Torque: 83 lb-ft @ 3000

the HF (D15B6) is a 1.5L 8 Valve SOHC engine with flat top pistons (2 valve reliefs per piston) and very small MPFI injection, with a 5400 rpm rev limit. The tranny has very long gears and it has been said that with a 7200 rpm rev limit, 90mph can be attained in 2nd gear !

The Si/EX (D16A6) is a 1.6L 16 Valve SOHC engine with dish pistons (4 valve reliefs per piston) and a slightly larger MPFI injection, with a 7200 rpm rev limit. The tranny has shorter gears than the HF, but identical gears than that of the DX, with only a different final drive.

The DX/LX (D15B2) is a 1.5L 16 Valve SOHC engine with flat top pistons (4 valve reliefs per piston) with a DPI "glorified carb" injection utilitizing a very small common plenum and a vertically mounted "throttle body" using two injectors. The DX tranny is identical to the Si tranny except for the final drive is more suited to highway crusing rather than acceleration.

The STD (D15B1) is a 1.6L 16 Valve SOHC engine that is almost identical to the DX D15B2, only the D15B1 has several downgrades to make it have slightly less horsepower (throttle body secondary choke plate is smaller, throttle body initial choke plate opens 1/2 way, ECU tuning is limited to the 70hp engine). The STD tranny can be compared to the 5 speed HF tranny, only without the 5th gear (4 speed).

-------------------------------------------------

92-95 engine specs:

The CX (D15B8) has the HF engine carried over to OBD1. The only difference is in the pistons, which are of course flat tops just like the HF but with, interestingly enough, 4 valve reliefs per piston.

The DX/LX (D15B7) is a 1.5L SOHC 16 valve engine with MPFI injection, and flat top pistons. Basically, it is a D15B2 with MPFI and converted to OBD1.

The VX (D15Z1) is a 1.5L SOHC VTEC-E, with slightly longer rods than the other 1.5L USDM engines, and DEEP dish pistons, but interestingly enough has HIGHER compression than the other engines of this year, including the D16Z6 SOHC VTEC. The VTEC-E engine runs on a 12 valve econo-burn mode, until "VTEC" is engaged, and then it runs on a normal 16 valve 1.5L SOHC mode.

The EX/Si (D16Z6) is a 1.6L SOHC VTEC 16v engine with MPFI injection (arguably similar to D15B7). It has dish pistons with 4 valve reliefs per cylinder, and variable valve timing and lift on the Intake valves only.

this concludes my engine lesson for today. thanks for listening and tune in next week, same civic time, same civic channel.

BTW, all CRX HF's had MPFI injection, even 88-89.

i thought the hf was a 8 valve D15B6 but wasn't 100% sure on it. thnx for the confirmation

i have to correct you...the dx/lx and std are 1.5L....hence being the d15. the d16's are 1.6L but i'm 100% sure you know that and it was simply a typo

this time it was more messing around than tech witts. he left such a great answer how could i possibly let the typo's slip through?

to be honest it was nice to know that the hf is the 8 valve i was thinking it to be. it's also nice to have some crx discussions. it used to be all about hatches...then slowly sedans. the crx is due

heheh - god knows Emissions maybe? :P

'tis weird - the dual carb 1500 we got was 100ps or thereabouts, for all the Fi stuff the US got, that added 8bhp tops? Throw in the fact that you got ripped and didn't get the ZC in your CRX and that would be the biggest rip I mean, we didn't get the B16A, but back then no-one in the buying market knew what it was

we did get ripped off. generally jdm owners are very smug because they know we got the shit end of things....you can be too, bastid. but when it comes down to it, i know you are sympathic to our woes.

you know what we got that you didn't? a STD. that doesn't even sound right (lmao)

This is my first post at automotiveforums.

I believe I currently have a d15b6 in my 91 civic. In an attempt to improve my fuel economy, I have been considering swapping engines, especially with what I bet is a surplus of spare d15z1s and d15b8s (following the recent j-spec swapping craze).

A hasport tech told me that a harness for a d15z1 would be a "nightmare," but suggested the d15b8 from a civic cx would be much easier. Once I read the above quote in this thread however, I am wondering is the main difference between my d15b6 and a cx's d15b8 the ecu? Could I put a cx OBD1 ecu (I'm very unfamiliar with OBD1) into my civic and it be the same as swapping engines as my d15b6 is apparently essentially the same as a d15b8?

I wouldn't think that the difference in piston heads would impact mpg that much. There is a 10 mpg difference between the '91 d15b6-powered civic and the 92 d15b8-powered cx, BTW. Any advice, info or suggestions? Sorry if I'm asking for advice that's already been given out before.

If I could afford it, I'd be driving an insight. Or if I could've even found a decent priced civic vx in this area....

does this mean that you can only swap the head from a dx/lx to an hf block and you cant swap in the si/ex because of the dish pistons? i am looking into this head swapping and its so confusing everyone has different opinions so whats stopping you from giving me yours (bonus points if its right)
