Im just curious, how do you think a police scanner is going to allow you to avoid tickets?

Yeah, seriously... I have a police scanner that I listen to when at home (never leaves my room actually) and there is NO way you'll be able to avoid a cop waiting somewhere or what have you. Also keep in mind that esp. in bigger cities, more and more cops use cell phones rather than their radios to keep certain ears from knowing things. And if you have a scanner that can pic those conversations up, then you're already breaking the law and people's privacy. If a cop is waiting as a speed trap on the side of the road, you'll never know he's there since they don't typically radio communicate when out like that untill they get a stop and radio in for plate checks, Even then you'll never know where they are at.

All that aside, Radio Shack is known for their RADIO scanners (as they are called) and Uniden makes some very nice ones as well. The Uniden Bearcat is a particularly nice one. I know Best Buy carries a few Uniden scanner models.

It's coo the be nosey and listen to what's going on in your city, but street races... Some PD's have digital frequencies they use that a normal scanner can't pick up, a digital frequency scanner is at least $1000 if not more, and also they will use their cell phones to talk to eachother. You better believe they know racers use scanners and aren't going to blow their cover when busting up one when they have undetectable communication resources at hand.

Not to preach, but if you want to aviod trouble, I'd avoid the races, the risks are way too high than what it's worth in consequences. I know here in So. Cali the penalties are very harsh. Any hint of street racing here, and they will impound your car. Not for 30 days like they used to, but for LIFE! You'll never get to see your car again.

But of course, to each their own. Just be extra careful. This is why I only stick to the tracks to race at. Much more respect that way too.
