High pitched whistling under hood

There seems to be a high pitched whistling sound to the left of my intake manifold under and next to the throttle body. I can't hear it while I drive, but it appears after my car has been on a few minutes. I got my timing belt changed a few weeks ago, then I noticed a weird noise when I started my car. I took it to pep boys who'd done the work and they said the alternator belt was loose. Id been hearing the whistlng noise since a little after the alternator noise. They said it was an air hose when they heard it. I've searched forums before but the topic ends up on telling you how to make the noise sound like a turbo. The whistling noise is extremely annoying. Does any one know what hose it might be, or what the problem is. I know its not the intake, I tightend it up. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Re: High pitched whistling under hood

Its hard to say what it is with out actually hearing the noise. When the car is running & the noise is present find the area where you hear noise most then start moving(twist/flex) around hoses. If the noise gets louder you may have a loose, disconnected, or cracked vacuum hose.

it could be anywhere. I would start with checking all the vacuum hoses and make sure something everything is connected or there might be a cracked hose....

Thanks. I'll probably buy a manual tommorrow to tell me where all the hoses and everything else for that matter goes. Is haynes good, or do most people around here prefer the Helms? I don't seem to be losing power, but then again I don't strap it on a dyno everyday, my judgement may be off.

i had some kind of big weird whistling sound that had a big pitch in about the same area. i would get that noise and then my idle would drop really low and then my b16 would eventually die out. it actually turned out that it was the idle screw or whatever. it wasnt set to the right position or whatever, but after adjusting that the noise went away and my car drives fine now. maybe that may be your problem.

Is that the Idle Air Control Valve? I'll try and find it, and then see where it should be set at. Thanks, its getting annoying, almost embarassing.

Is it that the hex nut with a rubber fitting on the end next to the exhaust manifold? If it is I tightened it, but it seemed to loosen itself or something and the noise came back. Since it never was there until I had pep boys do a full timing belt change shouldnt they fix it, they messed up on something else during the timing belt change too, but they already fixed that. It appears once my car is warmed and is only there when I'm not giving any gas, if I give a little gas in neutral it goes away. I don't want people around me to start thinking acuras and hondas are cheap, but I dont want to spend $100 on something I could fix. Help me out please. It also seems noise wise evenly spread by the intake manifold and headers.

If pep boys fucked it up, let them fix it.

dont ever go to pepboys! especially for something like your timing belt. But anyways they probably did not put the alternator back in the right position causing the belt to be loose and it will squeel in the high pitch you described. I changed the timing belt before and forgot a nut in the alterantor to hold it in place and it was real noisy but not until a few minutes after it was running. Check the alternator and see if all the bolts to mount are there first and then if they are have them adjusted and make certain that the belt has the proper tension on it. You might even have to replace the belt. and helms is a good manual to go by trust it and use it well

I want to sew those bitches. I already took it back, and they said the alternator belt was loose, so they fixed that(i thought). Should I tell them I want the belt replaced(is it probably messed up now?) What else might be messed up, since what you said sounds like the problem.

well go to a competant mechanic first
or somehow (ie yourself) check the timing belt and make sure it is actually right and the teeth on the cam gears line up when at tdc
also check the timing belt tension
when the timing belt was replaced the water pump should have been replaced as well if it wasn't the now you know why not to go to PepBoys
If you have the tools and a helms manual (or haynes they can be useful too ) then do the work yourself because then you know you did it to the book and not the "Shit Boys" way
good luck and if all else fails visit a honda or acura dealer but that is the la$t resort bc they can = $$$ even though it is done right
