New member in need of help...
Drives normal, but somtimes it will shift hard between first and second gear. Usually after engine warms up, or after I've been driving in third gear on the interstate, then go back to stop and go driving, can't tell what is really triggering it. After a while I can notice a low whurring sound, but can't pinpoint where it is originating. It's an automatic. Check engine lite is on , went to AutoZone, got a code #P1870.

This sounds like the same exact problem I've been having with my '96 Camaro. I did some research on the web and it seems to be a common problem and is related to the TCC (torque converter clutch) regulator valve in the valve body of the 4L60E transmission. Apparently there is excessive wear with this particular valve but it can be fixed relatively easily by boring out the valve body and putting in an oversize valve. Any good transmission shop should know about this issue and the repair, so if you call around and find one that seems to know what they're talking about, they should be able to perform the repair for $200-300. I'm taking my car in on Friday for this repair and the price they quoted me was $250. They use the Sonnax kit and reamer. You can find more information at http://www.thesurecure.com/parts/parts/SC-4L60-E.htm. I'll let you know if it does the trick for me. Good luck!

I took my Camaro to a transmission shop and had them ream out the valve body and install the oversize Sonnax TCC regulator plunger. The problem has been fixed! No more "jolt" between 1st and 2nd gear and it runs about 200 rpms less on the highway. The repair cost $275 in all, which is not bad considering that most places will try to convince you that the transmission needs to be completely rebuilt for $1500+.
