Exclamation Proud New 240sx Car Owner!!!!

After searching all of summer for a good deal on a 240sx, finally found one today. Got an s14 240sx w/ 92k miles for only $4gs. Runs great and paint still looks new. I have some questions though, I heard that at around 90k miles the 240sx's brakes rust up and you have to get those replaced. Also the oxygen air mass sensor may need to be replaced (same prob with my 95 maxima so maybe nissan's oxygen air mass sensor sux). Do you know any other things I should check out??? MY mechanic said I'll need to replace the chain belt, which will cost me around a grand , but oh well I think i got a good deal on the car still. Also what octane gas do you put in the car??? I put in premium today but if it only requires 89 then i'll put in 89. Seems my car isn't getting very good gas mileage either, drove 10 miles and i saw the meter go 1/8th of the way, or it could be I'm just used to the Civic's great fuel efficiency. I'm probably just going to replace the gas filter and have the fuel injection cleaned out just in case though. Any feedback/input will be greatly appreciated. I'll definetly be on the forums now that I finally got a 240sx, and probably get a SR20 engine when i get more money.

very nice. sounds like you got a great deal. yeah you may want to check the brakes. I bought mine w/ 90k miles on it and the rotors and calipers were fine but the pads needed replaced. Those were a quick install and the brakes work great. Not sure about the oxygen sensor though. I'm at 99k miles now and it's still working fine. You'll be able to tell when that is going bad. The car will start running kind of rough and you will be able to smell some fuel (running rich). As for the timing chain, you and a friend can do it yourselves in a weekend. It's not that hard of a job but you just need to take your time on it. The FSM gives you step by step instructions on how to change it. One of the other manuals like a chiltons or haynes normally has a pretty good description on how to get the job done as well. As for the gas to put in, I normally put in premium. It doesn't require it, but I do it anyways. I still put in 89 ocasionally and it runs perfectly fine. I've never put 87 in it but I couldn't imagine anything going terribly wrong with it in stock form. And yeah the gas mileage will be a little worse than a civic. When I had my 91 civic dx I would average about 300-325 miles around town at close to 375 highway. With the 240 I normally get around 230-250 around town and 280-300 highway. It all depends on how you drive though. I've gotten as bad as 190 to the tank around town. That's right when I got the car though and I wasn't really used to all the extra power over the civic, so I decided to have some fun with it (i.e... flooring it at every light )... I'm not trying to change your mind about the sr20, but just remember that there are plenty other options as well. Anyways, congrats again on getting the car hope you enjoy it

don't do it.... save up and get that engine swap. at least swap in a ca18det, you can pick one up for around $800.

i think you're just used to the honda getting good gas mileage. my 240 SUCKED on gas mileage, i got about 14mpg at the very most. i put 93 in my car just because we don't have 91... look in the owner's manual, it says put at least 91. 89 will retard your ignition timing and make it slower, with possible engine damage. you can also mix half 93 and half 89... also, replace that oxygen sensor, under $30 at autozone and that might be your gas problem. stock 240s should get about 15mpg.

you guys are nuts. my car gets at least 24 MPG on 89 octane and only one oxygen sensor works.

"stock 240s should get about 15mpg." Are you sure?

gas milage????

What... you guys get 14, 24, etc.... that's horrible.

I get nearly 30 in the city, and as high as 38 on the highway.

The car runs way better on Prem gas too by the way.

that is the most rediculous statement i have ever heard.

the car that sucks the most gas is the lamborghini SUV which looks like the hummer, and it got 11 MPG. and its a v10 or v12. so if the 240 is puttin only 15 mpg, it has to have , i dunno..... 600 horsepower or so?!.

My old land rover had a 182bhp 4.0L V-8, and I managed to get 14mpg on a good day : ). Just thought I'd throw that out there.

i heard Ford's jumbo-ute, the Expedition, only gets something like 8...

i bet my M30 stock won't be too great either. 3.0 V6 pushing 3,000lbs around? yeah...

but once i strip out the interior, she should be all good.

thanks for all the information guys. thanks mynismo, my mechanic said my timing chain doesn't need to be replaced until 2-3 years so by then I'll probably sell it (of course telling the buyer about the timing chain) then buy an SR20, I think the RB25's will probably be out of my range. My friend came over and looked at it, and said the thing I should do now to make it faster that's quick is replace the airbox, the high flow kind that'll add like 15 hp and it'll only cost me $50. Any other suggestions on quick and cheap hp increases?? I'll probably get a better intake+exhaust system later too, for fuel efficiency and speed. Also does anyone know where i can buy this airbox that'll give me 15+ hp???
