Cool

I was at the light in my 90 GS a lexus sc 400 pulled up and started reving so we said green light it is on, so the light turned and it was a tie at frist then around my third gear i started to pull away fast and he was flooring it so i moved in to 4th and later to 5th and he was like a little fly in the back and i waited for him at the next light and when he pulled up i asked did he want to go again he said man no the way that i just smoked him. it felt good that my DOHC FLAT4 beat a supercharged V6

Uh... your Eclipse has an inline-4, not a flat-4 (unless it has a Subaru or Porsche/VW motor swap). And that Lexus GS400 has a normally aspirated V8, not a supercharged V6. The Lexus GS300 has a normally aspirated inline-6, though.

If you beat a GS400, it's for one of three reasons: you're lying, your car is not very stock, or the other guy couldn't drive. :-)

racerjon he said SC400 not GS400!!!
but you see the thing is the SC400 is a V8, but this car isn't really new so it only has 260hp and does 0-60mph in just under 7s, it's basically a really luxurious sports sedan. It's last generation was started in 1991 and lasted till somewhere around 1998 i think.... it also cost over $50,000. I really doubt you'd beat it in a GS, but if you did.... good kill

and flat and inline is a HUGE difference..... inline means that the cylinders are well in line hehe, not in a V formation they're in I formations, while a flat 6 like porsche uses, the cylinders don't work up and down they move side to side, like the cylinders are flat I----I like so and not flipped so that they're standing up

not a very good explanation but i hope you understand

Gang$tarr: thanks for correcting my mistake. :-) But the Lexus SC series and GS series do have the same mechanicals anyway. :-) All I was saying was that I doubted he beat one in a fair race with a 120 (140?) horsepower 1990 Eclipse GS (non turbo, front wheel drive). Totally stock, that Eclipse would go 0-60 in like 9 seconds...

Steel: good question. An inline-4 means all 4 cylinders are in a straight line with each other, operating above a crankshaft. Most 4cyl cars are inline-4's... the only exceptions to this that I can think of are most Subarus, and many older Volkswagens, and some older Porsches, which are flat-4's.

Most of the popular Hondas/Acuras/Nissans/Toyotas are inline-4's, and the engine is mounted side-to-side in the engine compartment, with the transmission on one side and underneath. Similar to this are the inline-6 engines very popular with BMW (325, 328, 330, '95 & newer M3) and Toyota (Supra) and Jeep (4.0L Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee) which are usually mounted lengthwise due to their size.

On the other hand, flat-4's are two banks of two cylinders on a horizontal plane, firing "in opposition" with each other around a central crankshaft in the middle. The most popular cars with flat-4's are the old Volkswagen Beetle and most Subarus. Some BMW motorcycles also share this principle, as well as some Ferraris (the 512BB series of the late 1970's to mid 1980's with its flat-12) and every Porsche 911 ever made (flat-6, turbo or nonturbo) along with many older Porsche race and street cars (356, 912, 914, 550 Spider, RSK, etc) with their flat-4's.

The main differences are dimensions. An inline-4 will be longer and taller than a flat-4... because the pistons are firing vertically instead of horizontally like in a flat-4. A flat-4 will be shorter but wider... which is good because it means a lower center of gravity and plenty of room on top to put manifolds and turbochargers and intercoolers (like on the Subaru WRX).

Hope that helps,

Jon

Killer Video

Has anyone seen this canadian music video which showed a Type-R going over a little hill and crashed, killing the driver... it's really sad. His friends dedicated a song to them and it's somewhere on-line... they got the whole thing on their camcorder and created the music video.

I used to live in that neighborhood. My parents still do. But hell, now I live near Ontario, CA, where street racing is bigger than ever....

As long as you don't race carelessly i think it should be okay.... except for circumstances not under your control like the other cars....

Those people who just don't plainly care about others are the ones i'm worried about..

HMMMMMM I DONT THINK YOUR RIGHT GANGSTARR FROM WHAT I HAVE ALWAYS READ IS THAT A "FLAT" ENGINE ALWAYS WAS TO DO WITH THE HEAD DESINGN. LIKE ALL OF TO DAYS CARS ARE ETHER A OHV OR OHC. A FLAT ENGINE IS BACK WHEN THE INTAKE AND EXAUST VALVES WERE LOCATED IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. NOT THE CYLANDER HEAD. AS FOR THE PORSHE MOTORS THERE TECHNACLY "BOXER" OR "OPPOSED CYLENDER" ENGINES MEANING THE CYLENDERS WERE THERE WAS NO V AND THEY WERE SET AT A 180 ANGLE. THE BOXER TERM COMES FROM THE WAY THE CRANK CASES WERE PRODUCED AND ASSEMBLED.
