L200 Power Mods

Just picked up a 2003 L200. 5 spd w/sport stuff. Had not planned on it however after incentives and 0% for 5 years I could not say no.

I went into the car knowing that not too many power modds are available. However I did find a way to get at least 6-8 HP and it only cost about $5.00.

The good thing about this power gain is that it did not cost any torque.
And, because the low end torque (1200-3000 rpm) actually increased, it feels like considerably more power than I am sure it really is.

This is bitchen, because from my experience. Even a 5 hp gain through an intake will cost you about 10 pounds of torque were you need it the most, in the bottom end.

You will be supprised at how easy it is. The same mod can also be applied to your ride if you have done some bolt-ons to intake and exhaust. You can tune as needed. Oh, and no check engine light either.

The one bummer about the early stages of modding the power plant is that at a certain point with the design of parts always being top end power, the gains are confined to the redline zone. If you cannot afford to thoroughly modd from air filter to exaust tip, & fuel curve, you end up becoming another unfortunate cliche'. Just lots of noise! If your mods are mild and add lower end torque, your car can be as much fun to drive at a fraction of the cost.

Bet you can't guess how?

I used to be an extreme tuner who loved noise more than power. However now that I all growed up, what really impresses me is stealth power, or the sleeper that kills. You may have read my rantings elsewhere about more power not requiring more noise. It occours to me that mass produced tuner parts do not come from this philosophy. That does not mean that noise is the only way to gain power. Out of all the brothers I cruz with, only one or 2 is happy with loosing all that bone crushing torque from the bottom end in a trade for noise.

It is thereby my contention that if designers looked at options in air management technology using vortex techniques, (Vortex building techniques have built in sound muting charactoristics.) they would not sacrafice so much torque just to get a few horsepower. But then can the general public afford highly developed parts. Rarely. So the mass produced parts based on very basic or crude ideas in air flow dominate the market. Just remember, the Vortex is all about velocity without which torque would not exist.
