Gear settings

I've just bought a 1990 Celica GT. Haven't even had a chance to really look under the hood (except to fix a transmission fluid leak.) Here's my question: The automatic transmission shifts late. It doesn't shift into 3rd until about 4000 rpm. When I does shift, it really pops, which is nice really because it feels torque-y. Anywayz, is there a way to set the transmission so it shifts a sooner without taking it in to a shop? What is the ideal rpm for the car to shift into 3rd? (I want to do this myself if possible so as to learn sumthin').

true, but that only means the car shifts gears at 3500 rpm rather than 4000 rpm. so, i'll be traveling down the street at 35 mph doing 3500 rpm and watching my gas needle plummet. someone told me of a cable that can be tightened or loosened to adjust the transmission. i've looked around the car for this cable but can't find it. chilton's doesn't mention how to do this either. looks like i'll just have to pay a mechanic 50 bucks ot adjust a cable. mechanics... pfft!

that the cable that attaches to the throttle body and goes to the tranny.

it moves when you step on the gas.

change the fluid or let everything warm up before you start driving.

my auto tranny does not want to go into 4th gear at all untll everything is warmed up

cable from the throttle body to the transmission, got it. there's got to be a way to adjust it. someone told me it's set to "tightly." no matter what the car's temp or how softly i accelerate, it shifts late. the car had just had the top half of the engine rebuilt when i got it, so i think the mechanics (mechanics... pfft!) didn't set the cable right when they put everything back. i should just shoot myself for getting an automatic to begin with. oh well.

thing is too that you will get more power at that part of the rpm band, so when u make it shift sooner, ur gonna be killin ur power a lil unless ur one hella leadfoot or something
