My car has been having this grinding sound sort of like metal to metal but it's actaully more like a muffler being drag on the road type of sound. And I can't find it. Plus, it goes on and off all the time. I could be shifting to 5th at 80mph and hear it or backing up the car and still hear it.
At first I thought it was my wheels cause I took my front wheels out to check my brakes, but I can see no real problem there. Does anybody know what it could? |

By the way you describe it, it could be the same problem I had once on a Ford Ranger---I thought the same things you say. It turned out to be the heat shield/cage around the catalytic converter rattling and vibrating. It sounded like some horrible metal-to-metal contact or maybe something dragging on the pavement. I stopped the noise by installing two very large hose clamps tightly around the thing to stop the rattling and that fix worked for 150,000 miles. Maybe it will work for you too.

I'll check it out.
One of friends was riding in the car with me and he heard it, and he says it could the gears, but I don't see how that could be. Another say it could be something wrong with the springs or suspension because it kept happening when I hit a bump or changed lanes and going over the divider. I really don't want to take this car to shop yet. |

Well, it wasn't the heat shield for the cat. It's nice and firm, so it has to be something else.
My car is a Golf III. btw. |

try checking the shield on the exhaust manifold.

Before dismissing the shield on the cat converter, take a hammer and smack the exhaust tubing somewhere near the converter. Liste.n to the noise it makes. You won't be able to tell just by checking it with your hands to see if it seems tight.

UPDATE:
It's not the heat shield, though the casing or lining of the whole exhuast is sort of loose. I'm thikning it could be the transmission and gears, because like I said, the sound would only last like a second, but it last for a while when I'm in either 2nd or 3rd and also be around 4K rpms. Is it connected somehow? |
