Question Which clutch?

Ive got an 88 Civic 4dr DX 1.5L, stock motor, and my clutch just burned out after about 8,000mi (4 months) so I'm about to replace it. It was replaced just before I bought it. When I go to Kragen Auto they say they have 2 diff clutch kits for my model - one is 7 1/2" one is 7 7/8". Which one should I get? Monument Auto Parts only has the 7 1/2" clutch kit.

I wonder if maybe it takes the 7 7/8" one but the last guy that had the car installed the 7 1/2" and it fit, but burned out the clutch in 4 months because of it. Of course, the clutch could have also burned out because this is my first manual-trans car... I'm also planning to do all the work myself with a buddy's help and I've never replaced a clutch before so I don't want to put on the wrong part and not know it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Mike

It all depends on the flywheel. The Si's and I think the EX's had the 7 7/8ths and the DX's and LX's had the 7.5's. The disc is the same for both, but the flywheel is a little bit bigger and the one for the Si's has about 30lbs more pressure. I got myself an Si Flywheel so I could get the higher pressure clutch. Of course, if you want, I have a full ACT setup on an Si flywheel that I would be willing to give up for $200, which is probably what the Kragen clutch will cost you anyway. I also have an Si tranny that I'd sell to you for $150, which will give you lower gearing and better acceleration. In any case, try to get to an Si flywheel and clutch, and check the torque that the pressure plate makes, cuz that will affect your launches.

Re: Which clutch?

4GZChatch, thanks dude you rock, that is exactly what I needed. My car is broken down right now so I'm just gonna use stock parts, but I'll try to throw the Si clutch and flywheel on there if I can get both of those parts by tomorrow - otherwise I'll go for the 7 1/2" part.

Thanks!
Mike

Actually, i found out that it's a ZC trans w/a stock LSD, so I've decided to use it and go Z6. Sorry. But you can Email Kris, he has a DX tranny that came out of my car in his shop, with the flywheel and an almost new clutch pressure plate. Get him $75 plus shipping and it's yours. It runs good, only grinds a little when you shift at high rpm's from 2nd to 3rd. Hope that helps. Sorry to disappoint.....
