|
Blower fan troubles
Has anyone had a problem with their blower cutting in and out? Mine quit working for a day and then came back on for some reason. I am afraid to touch it now for fear it might not come back on.

Blower fan operates intermitantly
Just read your post regarding the blower fan. I' been experiencing the same thing. It started this past summer while running the AC. It would never just cut out. It would either run when the fan switch was turned from off to 1-2-3-4 on or it wouldn't. It started at the begining of the AC season. At first I thought it had something to do with the position of the fan selector switch being that I was leaving it on high (4) so started turning the fan off proir to engine shut down. This didn't help. this intermitant operation went on for about two weeks. Then for whatever reason the problem went away for the rest of the summer. Now we're in the heating season and guess what. Yah, the first morning we had scrapable frost on the windshield the blower quit again. so, all this past week I not only froze on my way towork but I could barely see to drive. So today I pull the car into the garage to see if I can diagnose the problem. I figure I'll start by dropping the blower assy. down and work my way back tracing the power circuit. I turn the ignition switch to on (last detent before starter engage) and turn the blower selector switch on and as always cycle it through all speed levels stopping on 3. I get out of the car and start looking under the hood and wiggling wire harness assys. I'm thinking that maybe when I changed out the trans. and clutch last week I could have knocked something loose. After farting around with that for awhile. I decide that before I get serious about this job I'd better clean up my tools from the last one. So I pull up a stool and start wiping off some sockets and stuff before putting them back in my toolbox when all of a sudden, without provocation the blower fan starts running! I jump up, jump into the car and start fooling with the fan speed switch, then the fan quits once again. I leave it set to three amd go into the house to look on "Google" to see if I can find anyone else with this problem. That's how I got here. After about 10 minutes I go back to the garage and low, (that's a biblical term) the fan is once again running! I again fool with the selector and it once again quits. This cycle repeats itself again. And that brings me to this point in time. I'm currently waiting to see if the blower fan starts itself again after setting the selector to position 4. Let me go look............... No not yet. So you see, I don't have an answer to our problem but, If I find out, I'll post it. If you or anyone else has an answer I'd be glad to hear from you.

I just fixed this problem. Look either at the ground on the blower motor or the wires going into the motor, I simply ran a new wire for about a foot where there was a loose connection off the input side and viola! blower! May not be just so easy for everyone else, just check connections on the unit itself, especially for the intermittant symptoms. Had the same problem with the stereo, rear right speaker. Try that, if it aint work, get a haynes manual.

OK. This may or may not be the final fix for me or anyone else but this is what I've found since yesterday. I pulled out the blower resistor assembly located just to the left of the blower motor. Both of these things are located under the glovebox. There's no panel to remove. It's all just hanging under there. Only two screws need to be removed to drop this out. The first thing that comes to my attention, after unpluggung the four wire plug is that the white plastic plug that connects to the resistor block is "crumbly" on one corner. Further inspection reveals that the Blue wire with a White stripe (the thickest wire of the four Blue wires) looked as though it had overheated at some point and partially melted the plastic connector and the insulation on the wire. The schematic in the Haynes Manual (yes, I own a few of them, they are excellent.) shows a circuit breaker in line with the blower. One would think that this would trip to prevent the wire from getting that hot but, it never did. I found the 30 amp breaker above the fuse block located under the dash next to the hood release. While the blower was running I pulled the breaker out of its socket and the blower stopped. So I know I had the right one. I disassembled the braker and found nothing wrong with it. So, I got a new spade lug, cut back the Blue and White stripped wire, stripped it, and crimped the lug onto the wire. Slipped this back into the white plastic plug. Mounted the resistor block then plugged everything back in. It's only been 24 hours since I did this but, the blower hasn't quit on me yet. The only other thing that concerned me was that the steel bracket that holds the resistor wires had a rusty look to it. So, if I encounter any more problems I'll probably change it out. I'll check back to add to this post/thread to say whether this "fix" holds or not. (In a week if it's still good- sooner if it fails again)

Having the same problem with my 97 Escort LX (79,254 mi.). Fan stopped working altogether about a month ago. About a week later it came back on. Then 4 days ago it's back on blink. Finally getting around to checking it out. Looked at the connectors at the blower resistor and the single connector (blue/blk) has some dark gummy stuff on it, like something was shorting. Going to go do some testing and will post results here.
Got info from this site for diagnostics: http://www.startribune.com/stories/435/3662733.html Not sure what the proper resistance would be for the blower resistor. Any body have some specs? Thanks!

Well, looks like in my case it was just some dirty connectors at the blower resistor quick connector assembly. A quick cleaning with an emery board did the trick! Knock wood.

Blower motor resistor wiring harness
94 1.9L, has anyone had any expierence in replacing the blower motor resitor wiring harness? The electrical connector at the resistor is partially melted causing blower fan speed #4 not to work, and I thought a new harness would solve the problem?

My '91 LX has recently lost speeds 3 and 4 as well. Maybe I'll check the resistor area.

I never replaced the wiring, instead I coated the exposed terminal #4 with liquid electrical tape and that seemed to have solved the problem.
The resistor never went bad.

I'd just like to thank everyone who posted in this thread about their problems. Last night my blower stopped working, and I researched it today and came across this site. It ended up only being a connection problem to the blower assembly under the glove box. Thanks for saving me a ton of hastle!
