LCD radio display problems

I've got a '97 GTP, with a factory Delco AM/FM/Cassette/12-disc changer. The problem is the LCD clock on my radio doesn't work right. The numbers will be all messed up, only showing pieces of numbers, or sometimes the only thing that will display is the colon between the digits on the clock. After a couple of minutes, it will usually start displaying correctly. Occasionally, thumping the display will make it work. The '97 Bonneville SSE I used to have had the same problem, the display messing up, except it was the factory Bose system, but it was still a Delco radio. My '94 SE never had this problem.

Has anyone else had a radio display problem? Is there any way to fix it without replacing the radio? (Which if I have to replace the radio, I want to take out the 12-disc changer and put in a Delco factory-type slot CD player with equalizer.)

Your radio display can be fixed but only by a Delco repair center!!

I had a similar problem, my radio display would somtimes work correctly (maybe once a week) , but most of the time it would not show at all, i took it to specmo and they repaired it for 99$. It is a common problem on 96/97 GP's and grand ams.

Re: LCD radio display problems

Well, my display works correctly most of the time, but like, once a week, it doesn't want to. I've had three Pontiac vehicles ('94 GP SE, '97 Bonne SSE, and my current '97 GTP) and every one of them have had the same radio display problem. The '94 only did it once or twice the entire year and a half I had it, the Bonne did it every day, it would be all screwed up looking, you could thump on it, and it would correct, and the GTP does it occasionally, with the same fix...thump on the display. I see no reason to pay $99 to have mine fixed when I can buy a '99 Grand Am Delco CD player from my friend for a little of nothing cause he put a Kenwood in his car. He says his display never did that...here's to hoping.
