My son asked me to find the answer to the question of 22R or 22RE as being better. Personally, being a computer/hypnosis geek, I don't have a clue what the answer is, so I post this as I hope someone with experience can avail an answer.
Thank you for considering the question. Peace, David |

personally i would go with the 22RE. fuel injected compared to carbureted.

well, fuel injection tends to be more efficient and easier on the engine.
both in the end can be made to have the same power, but the 22re would probably run more smoothly |

for all out race engine they are about even. for a street car an all out race carbed 22R can still be used but an all out race 22RE wouldnt be as practical (bumpy cams make idle suck and bigger injectors will make mpg just as bad if not worse than the carb). but if you plan on ultimate power the 22RE is the way to go. its so much easier to turbocharge or supercharge. and the main reason im saying carb is a bit better for street is because you can do the hybrid (20R head 22R block) but if you tried to do it with the 22RE you have to go with double row timing chain conversion if its a late block. the 22RE intake will not fit on the 20R head so either you have to do extensive mods to the head to make it fit or make a custom intake manifold (big $$$ if you cant do it yourself.) plus there are many people pushing about 230hp+ out of N/A carbed (dual webers, mikunis, etc) hybrids and ive never heard of anyone pushing those numbers out of a FI hybrid or even a 22RE.
