Tranny Filler Plug ... Help ASAP
Well I goto change my tranny fluid and guess what.
The 17mm bolt you need to remove to fill it back up wont come off. So my car is again sitting on jackstands waiting for me to find a way to get that sucker off.. ANY help would be awesome. |

I just did this last week and mine was frozen on too.
I sprayed tons of wd-40 on it, that didnt work. Then i got a huge like 12" or more ratchet, that didnt work. I dont know if you are supposed to this but what i did was take that huge ratchet and hit is with a hammer until it started to move a little bit. Once it turned a little i could do it by hand. |

invest in a breaker bar taht way u dont bust all the teeth on your rachet. yeah mine was stuck pretty good, but breaker bar and pulling on it i got mine off. oh yeah dont forget, gm syncromesh friction modified

get really long extensions or a 17mm open end and hit it witha hammer

what i did last time was i got a six prong rachet instead of the usual 12 cause those almost rounded off my bolt tied a rope to it and braced both feet on the bumper and pulled till i fell down, it's a really ghetto way to do it but it's basically your only choice if you don't have a breaker bar.

put a pipe on it to give it leverage and pull it or push it

If you can't get it off you can always use the speedometer cable hole to fill it up.

use a brand new 17mm socket on a 1/2 rachet one hand on the socket holding it steady and use the other to pull ratchet. Doing it while engine warm or hot also works good.

I never had any problems getting mine off, came off fine with a 17mm 3/8s.
Also never use 12pt sockets for anything, they strip bolts, rookie mistake.

If you've muffed your bolt up, don't forget your ol' friends the vice grip. Just lock 'em on and whack with a rubber mallet. Then replace the bolt when you're done. If that fails, well, it better not!

hehehe if that fails.....matco makes a self locking pliers called cobra pliers....they dig into whatever your grabbing onto and self lock....put it this way....i did an alignment on a car....tie rod was frozen....grabed tie rod with cobra pliers....wouldnt budge.....decided to put all my weight on it....didnt budge....ended up heating the tie rod up then bouncing on the pliers....just giving an example what the pliers can do....IMO everyone should have a pair.

I had this same problem..on my car there wasn't enough clearance to get a socket on the bolt...I could use a wrench only. If you can still get a wrench to stay on the screwed up bolt, you can increase your leverage with a second wrench (box-end) - If you use the open-end of the wrench on the bolt for your handle side and then slide the box-end of the 2nd wrench over the open-end, you can effectively double the mechanical advantage by now have two wrenches worth of length. My step-dad taught me this trick..it is kinda odd to get it to work, but once you get it, it is neat. I can't draw, but if I get a chance to do a sketch, I will. - If a "C" is the open-end of the first wrench and "O" is the box-end of extra (2nd) wrench....you slide the box-end over one part of the "C" of the open-end...in this case the right-hand part since you are trying to undo the bolt...so when you pull on the 2nd wrench, the "O" part locks into the right-hand part of the "C", and giving you one long wrench..
- my description sucks..sorry.. Good Lucki like the super cobra plier idea or vise grips too...you're prolly gonna need to replace the bolt anyway, so beating it up now to get it off isn't really an issue. Mine was a bitch to get off, I tried beating it with a hammer and finally jacked the car up high enough, sprayed the shit out of it and had to use my entire body strength/weight and the two wrench technique. Edit...Sometimes MS Paint rules - here's my 5 minute drawing...I think I got it right..notice the 2nd wrench is cocked sideways (skinny part of wrench facing you) - hopefully the pic is big enough
