Pilot bearing

well, I'll start this with the funny story: I'd put the transmission back in my car after an engine swap. (a whole other story together. early 92 engine into a 93 car. all kinsa fun) I had most of it hooked back up, and was about an hour from starting the car... well, at least trying. My buddy walks in and holds up the throwout bearing. he says "isn't this supposed to go in your trans mission" I uttered a stream of profanity that really isn't polite in this medium, and proceded to take the tranny back out.

question: where is the pilot bearing supposed to go? auto zone said in the crankshaft behind the flywheel. but if that is so, why doesn't it fit? question ansered there. this engine had an automatic transmission on it. mine, is a manual... could be differant. I said heck with it then. it'll work without it. then I started looking at it. I would think the pilot bearing fit between the shaft out of the tranny onto the crank shaft. but the hole in the flywheel isn't big enough to allow that through to where I thought it would go. if the bearing fits between the flywheel and the crankshaft, what purpose does it serve.... they are bolted together...... must not go there. makes no sence.


so, where is the pilot bearing supposed to go?

The pilot bearing goes on the frount shaft of the tranny.

The throwout bearing goes on the input shaft, the pilot bearing fits between the flywheel & the crank I believe.

The pilot bearing goes in the end of the crankshaft.
The throwout bearing goes on the input shaft of the tranny, there should be a wire retainer that holds its on the input shaft.

Huh , wasn't aware the 1G's even had a pilot bushing/bearing. My '92 GSX simply had a hole in the center of the flywheel the input shaft fit perfectly into. In fact , they don't even list a pilot bushing/bearing at any autoparts store I've been to , either.............

DSMs dont use a pilot bearing. But anyone who said it goes in the end of the crank is right. We do obviously use a throw out bearing, and that is what pushes on the fingers of the clutch to relaease it, while still allow it to turn freely. If thats missing you wont be able to disengage the clutch. But since you mention the TO bearing in the first paragraph, then the pilot bearing in the second, I'm not sure if you are talking about the same thing, or if you actually think you need both in the car. Or maybe I'm just retarded At any rate, no pilot bearing to worry about. Jsut the TOB.

Yeah, now that I think of it there is no bushing. I've only had my tranny out 3 times so I should have remeberd that. But the dude needed some clarification on pilot and throw out bearings.

Thanks everybody. I'm gonna put the tranny back without the pilot bearing. (the TO bearing will be in place this time.) one of the problems of having a mutt of a drive drain. hopefully things will go smoother from this point on.
