pilot bearing
has anyone ever had trouble with their pilot bearing coming loose? the truck is a 95 with a 4.3. it started leaking oil a couple of months ago(now i know why) and now the clutch plate has to be resufaced. i think that is what it is called, it is right behind the crank. any input would be appreciated.

The pilot bearing is in the center of the flywheel. It keeps the tranmission drive spline centered in the clutch plate. If yours is lose it means it's spinning and needs replaceing. If it is cracked all up it has been hot. There made of bronze or brass. To remove one that is still tight pack it with grease and use a piece of shaft the same size as the transmission shaft, place it in the now packed bearing and give it a good smack with a hammer, the grease pushes the bearing out. Once it's out enought to get something on like vise-gripsŪ use them and remove it.
Use a soft hammer like a brass one to tap the new bearing back in flush, tap the bearing even all around so it goes in square. Note: if the old bearing is lose check the flywheel for wear with the new bearing,it should not go in too easy! amastron |
