turbo

I don't know how much it would cost, but I would say it would be a waste of money, though. Just get a 5.7

superchargers and turbos always produce wear on your engine just throw a shot of nos through it for kicks on the street put a low shot for street fun like a 75 shot and then kick it up for drag races to like 130 or so

what do you have efi or carb?

there are so many different kinds of nos kits

what do you plan to use it for and what is the highest shot you want to run through?

wear and tear on your engine?-what about the 75hp shot of nos u just suggested to him?! fry your internals, worst that u can expect from a turbo is u don't change your oil enough and your ball baring cracks and the turbine starts to scrape the inside of the coil, then u'll have to get a new turbo...but that's extremes in both situations. cheapest-definately the nitrous and prolly a bigger boost. plus i don't think they make turbo kits for firebirds, but doesn't mean u can't make your own . superchargers i've seen run the to $3-$5k range w/ 90-130hp gains-more than i can expect w/ any mod on my cavalier.

You guys are misinformed. Honestly I dont know where to start...
Lets start with nitrous:
1) Its nitrous, not nos, naws, or noz...N2O if your a geek but better than nos. NOS is a brand name and a subsidiary of Holley, its like calling gas, Chevron..."hey man, were getting low, lets go get some Chevron". Doesn't sound very good.
2) Nitrous does not "fry" internals, running lean "frys" internals, and the only internal that usually gets "fried" is the piston.
3) It is not safe to run a 75 shot on a stock motor that isn't prepped with some sort of fuel enrichment device, that is how you run lean, 130 shot is unwise on most stock motors. 50 shot is the rule of thumb for stock internals, but if done properly you can go higher.
4) Nitrous does not put any more strain on a motor than a turbocharger does, they both do the same thing, only in different ways. Neither put much strain on a motor when used in moderation and correctly.
5) Read this

Forced induction:
1) Most turbos dont have ball bearings
2) I dont think I have ever heard of a bearing coking and cracking, especially since a ball bearing turbo as the vast majority of ball bearing turbos are also water cooled, greatly reducing their tendency to coke. Also, ball bearings crack rarely, actually I havent seen that happen before.
3) Turbochagers have a coil? Do you mean the housing?
4) Read this

Don't mean to sound like an asshole, but I wanted to correct some myths and issues.

i know how nitrous works and i called it nos because nos to most people is nitrous and some stock motors can handel up to a 100 shot without any mods i have seen it done

and the strain put on by nitrous is only occouring when you use it which is not very often a turbo is always on therefore always creating wear on the engine

and to flyguy edelbrock makes a couple different nitrous kits if you are interested in nitrous

For the most part my post wasn't aimed at you, you seemed fairly knowledgable about the whole subject. As for some engines being able to handle up to 100 shot without incidince, I agree, some can, that is why I said "most"

About the issue of wear, a Turbo wont really increase wear on a motor significantly if the motor is properly maintained and you dont up the boost ridiculously high. I suppose you are right about a turbo being used more than nitrous though. Anyways, my post wasn't really aimed at you, although I do hate it when people call it nos.

ok, in defense of myself, i said 'nos' only when quoting someone else-nitrous all other times. yes, nitrous can fry internals-like in fast and the furious, one of the few acturate things in that movie. consistant use of nitrous will result in pistons and head gaskets being blow. consistant unsafe usage of nitrous, like using high shots, too rich of ratio, or just using it too often.

turbos-i correct my self, there are no ball bearings, but there are bearings, and they can crack. and they are oil cooled, not water cooled-certain intercoolers use water to cool the intaken air-but no water cooling the turbo itself. when i said coil, yes i meant housing. turbos cause more wear and tear than nitrous? in ways, the damage they produce r different. what about cars that come stock turbo?-do they not last as long as NA cars?-i think not. nitrous puts in high concentrations of oxygen into the engine which fire needs to burn and can cause it to overheat hence the frying and blowing up. while turbos can draw in too much air if psi's are too high and cause the heat from the movement of the air to prematurely ingnite the fuel.

but i think we can all agree that anything u use-turbo or nitrous-if u use it properly and safely, there shouldn't be any damage and all that bad stuff. idk who you were directing your comments to sluttypatton, so naturally i had to reply.

yah well i am one lazy person Sluttypatton when i say nos

i agree that when nitrous and turbo are used properly and installed properly with all the proper supporting parts ie: lifters, rockers, pistons, pushrods, fuel pump...and all that they both work well

and i try to be as knowledgeable on a subject before i open my mouth or in this case slam my fingers down..

I have spent many hours on holley.com in their nos department reading up on nitrous and how it works
