Angry 3000GT - Burning Oil

'93 3000GT with 90,000 miles, was burning a little oil until the car was left running overnight by my teenage daughter. Car began to really smoke, people driving behind can't see the car, just a huge cloud of smoke.

Did a compression test, with 150psi range readings, so I decided to rebuild the heads: lapped valves, cleaned up all the burnt oil, installed new valve guide seals, etc.....

Turned the car on and after it warmed up, no change to the oil smoke !

Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot the real problem, before plunging into tearing the engine apart again and losing more knuckle skin while removing the belts and timing belt covers ?

Sorry - I don't have anything to offer beyond some of the things you've already done.

Post your question on www.3si.org in the technical section and you might have one of the real pros on these cars give you some good information.

Check the valve guides. The car could have possibly gotten hot and burned them up? Either way, that's one of the main problems with our cars...the valve guides go bad. Well...when I say check the valve guides, of course that isn't easy...but, I recommend replacing them.

Thanks, valve guides looked good when I replaced the valve guide seals. Valves were sliding smoothly without any wobble or play on the valve stems. I suspect the oil rings, but the compression was good. Don't know if bad oil rings would show up on a compression test.

same prob

hey man,
i just got a `94 3000gt a week or so ago. the oil pressure and temp fluctuates when stop and idle for a while. my coolant is also leaking i think, it went low in like less than a week after i changed all the fluids. a friend told me i should replace my heads and hope that my oil pump hadn't gone bad, i'm still confused so i don't know what to do. i know this was back in aug, so maybe you found the problem....let me know if you did, thanks

Re: 3000GT - Burning Oil

Bad oil rings would actualy bring up the compression because the oil seals the piston to the cylinder wall. It sounds like the oil ring on the piston may be severly damaged. This seems to be the only possible problem because you rebuilt the heads. Other than that i couldent tell you.

There is a good chance you need to rebuild your turbos.

If the car smokes more after its idle it could mean that oil has built up in the intakes.

This is the exact same problem my friend had and it was solved by a turbo rebuild kit, which is basicly just some new seals.
