1985 Dodge Omni Transmission Flush

Ok, I'm new to the forum, but i found it while i was looking for a good dodge forum. Any help is very much appreciated. I recently purchased a four door automatic 1985 dodge omni. The transmission is having problems upshifting. I went to check the fluid level and found that the dipstick is rotted away and won't stay in the hole. I figure most of the rubber around the dipstick is probably in the pan and possibly clogging up the pump. Will a flush help this? I'm gonna try it and replace the dipstick. Any help on how to flush the transmission? I've never done this before. Any resources that might make this easy would be very much appreciated.

You can go to a parts shop and buy a tranny pan kit, which comes with a gasket and a filter, and pick up some tranny oil, 4 qts.
Remove the tranny bolts, carefully remove the pan. Wash and dry the pan. Replace the filter. Install the pan with the new gasket and fill her up. Check the fluid with the car running in neutral. Good Luck.

I would flush the system, this is one way of many to do it: remove the drain pan, clean it and the magnet and remove the filter, get your hands on a haynes or chiltons manual for your car, a library will let you use one for free
While the pan is still off adjust your bands, it is not hard and if you follow the directions in the manual you can do it, then install the pan, add enough oil to bring the level up to normal on the dipstick, now you do the flush, there are two oil cooler lines attached to the trany, one is the input and one is the output, if the manual don't tell you which is which, that is normal, then you'll have to experiment with a second person, remove one line from the cooler going to the radiator, either attach a clear hose to it so that the trany fluid will be directed away from your paint job and other parts, or point the tube in a direction that will not allow the trany oil to be sprayed all over your engine compartment.
Now this is where the second person comes in to play, they get behind the wheel and start the car when you are ready to go, then when the car is started in park you look to see if the oil comes out of that cooler line that you disconnected, if so then you found the output line, now shut off the car and get about 6 to 10 quarts of trany fluid ready, and a funnel to put into the dipstick hole, have the clear hose or the tubing set up to drain into a large pan, I use a section of about 6 feet of clear hose, and I direct it into a milk jug so I can see how much is being pumped out, I even make black marker marks on the jug at 1 quart intervals.
Now that everything is all set up, have the second person start the car, and as soon as the trany fluid starts flowing you start pouring your oil into the funnel, try to match the speed of the output line, as you watch the jug you will see as it goes from quart to quart in the gallon jug, that will give you an idea of how fast to add it, keep adding oil until it runs as clear as the new oil your adding.
Don't overfill just match the output, and don't stop adding fluid as the car is running, if you must stop then shut the engine off. You will see the oil go from dark to the nice light red or pink, remember it's only a 1 gallon jug so you'll have to stop sometime and dump it, after you are happy with the color of the flush then shut off the engine, remove the funnel, put dipstick back in, re-attach oil cooler line to radiator, clean up any spills, do a basic check of trany fluid level, don't overfill, now you'll have to warm up the engine totally, cycle it through the gears to make sure all air bubbles are gone and then check the fluid level when it is hot, add what is needed to bring it to the right level.
This is one way to do it, I have my tools all set up to do this so once you get the hang of it then it goes easy and you don't even make a mess, this will flush the converter of all of the old oil and blow it all out.
Goodluck, you will see it is not that hard, it's harder to explain then to do
