Cool I just bought a 944....

Hey everyone,
I have stumbled upon this site while i was looking for more info on my 1986 Porsche 944. i got it two weeks ago for 1500. it needs tiny repairs on the body and a new paint job. it didnt start. apparently the previous owner put in a new timing belt (which i hear is a bitch when it comes to 944's) but they didnt do it right. i put in a new battery and the windows and wipers and radio and all that works. we had it taken to a Foreign Auto Shop here in Jacksonville, FL. yesterday i got the call from the mechanic and he said that there's a bent valve(s) , i was like FU.CK! now its gonna cost like 1500 to fix that.

What do you guys here in the 944 Forum think? is the car worth it?

This is the problem with getting a "fixer upper" Porsche, you can get stuck with $1500 head jobs. If you're mechanically apt, you could rebuild your cylinder head for much less than that.

The odds are, there are more things wrong with the car too, doesn't sound like it was too well taken care of.

Unhappy

thanks c-bass, i would have replied earlier but i had trouble with signing in. well the mechanic called us and my dad went up there. and they changed the rods like they said they would but then it turns out that the head is warped and it has a blown gasket and the pulleys and rollers and what not need to be replaced. either the mechanic is greedy or we are seriously fucked. now what we are going to do is - keep the car and work on it slowly, on the weekends and such, and try to get it in really nice condition.

any suggestions on what we should do? do you guys think we should get a new (used) head, or get a another engine?

New Engines.

well. we decided not to pay freakin $3,000 to get the engine fixed. we bought 2 engines. one for the 944 and one for my dad's eclipse. the price for both engines is waaaaaaaay less than what its costs to fix up the existing engine in the 944. the 944 is back home now where it belongs, not at the stingy mechanic's shop. but is there any advice for us, when it comes to dropping in the engine? we plan on keeping the old engine and work on it and keep it as a spare.

Dude you got ripped. I see this happen all the time, you find a cheap 944 and think its a good deal and find out that for the cost of the repairs you can almost go out and buy a well maintained 944 Turbo. I'd sell the car or part it out, its not worth the hassle.
