Smile Installing M3 engine in Z3, any advice welcomed

I have purchased a 2002 M3 engine to install in my 2000, Z3. Are there any pitfalls that I should be aware of. Any advice is welcome. I don't intend to race it, just drive it. Where I can buy a good technical book about the engine and wiring would be appreciated.

Not rocket science indeed. However, before you start this extensive project, pause and consider:

1. The biggest problem with most swaps are mounts. Engine mounts, transmission mounts, etc. How will these essential parts hold up in the new chassis? Most swaps that we perform require the fabrication of new custom mounts, which need to be welded in its proper locations.

2.Fitment, if indeed the engine you put in is of larger displacement, how will you fit the new radiator, how will you route the vacuum lines, will you have the clearance for the master cylinder? Looking at schematics and diagrams don't do justice of the necessary alignment and fitment.

3. Wiring- Most new engines are tied into the transmissions (especially SMGs and Automatics), you in most instances, you can forget about stock wiring harness. Now, I'm not saying all of these issues are indeed the case for your particular swap, but these are common issues that as
swap professionals we face with any particular application. Something to think about.

4. As for books and literature to help you: Bentley (I think) make manuals that are in good detail about specific cars. I'm sure you can find some for BMW on ebay. Good day, and good luck.

Note to Audi, this is the type of help I was looking for. I have noted your comments and appreciate the pointer to Bentley. I looked at the web site, I hope their conversions are better than the web site. I will give them a call and check on an installation w/o rebuild as my engine is new.

How did it go?

I am very interested in hearing how this project went/is going. I was considering the same thing. How is the performance and did you have to change any drive train parts? Did you start with a manual or auto Tranny?
