Question Converting B16B to 1.8

I have heard of the stroker kits that can change the capacity of the engine from 1.6 to 1.8, but my delima is that the b16b engine has the b18c5 block on it....since there is already a 1.8 block on it why would i need a stroker kit to transform to 1.8l...Can I just buy the integra type r crank, rods, pistons, and piston rings to convert to the 1.8L?

Your question is a little confusing. You can't just arbitrarily interchange the engine code with the actual displacement. Changing to a crank, rods, pistons and rings from a 1.8L engine won't magically make your engine 1.8L if it's 1.6L now. You said they used a 1.8L block, but I can't imagine that just changing over to the other (1.8L) internals from you 1.6L parts would change the displacement that much. I think that would require some pretty radical differences for the pistons and rods, particularly considering that the pistons would have to be the same diameter, or at the very least damn close, unless your 1.6L pistons have some ridiculously thick rings on them. Did they use the same block but just drill the displacement smaller? If so, then you could theoretically bore it out and get it up to 1.8L, I suppose. Anyway, hope that helps a little. Maybe you should get some of the details on your engine to clarify your question for us.

Well, since in the af forum no one can help me i went and called a couple import specialized stores, and they told me that yes it is possible to change the crankshaft from the b18c to the b16b engine to increase displacement. The reason is that honda made the civic type r engine with a b16 head and a b18c5 bottom but the internals are approximately the same as a b16a with the exception of the pistons. Also, the stroker kits were ment for the 16a is not useful for the b16b. The difference in the b16b is that i can be 1.8L with a simple change of a crankshaft and connecting rods.

You should really research more. NOw, the B16B is a 1.6L motor with the output of 185hp at the flywheel. NOw, the B18C5 is a 1.8L. Now, the displacement of a motor is determined by the block.

Also, the crankshafts of the B18C and B16 motors are exchangeable - but the rods and pistons will have to be switched as well. Also, you must worry about the bore of the cylinder walls and the wristpin height of the CTR pistons.

K.. B16B you need to first understand the structure of the B-series motors

All a B18C5 is is a B16A on steriods. We are talking the same B-series block w/ higher flowing head and fuel delivery than the B16 as well as longer rods and high compression pistons. (which allows it to be 1.8L instead of 1.6L)

B16B and B18C5 are very similar, however you must remember that all the B18C5 is is just a stroked B16 motor. Crower produces a 2.0L stroker kit for B16s which includes a crank, rods, and pistons and can easily beat out a B16 motor stroked to 1.8L ( www.crower.com )

For more B-series motors performance parts.. Sport Compact Car magazine has a whole section set aside for B-series motor's performance parts this month. Pick it up! :sun:

Thanks for the info

The B16b motor has the same block hieght as the b18c5 but the internals of the the motor is b16a with ctr pistons.

By converting to 1.8l I can still use as a street car and have the extra power I want.
I contacted spoon about the 2.0l stroker kits and they told me that the engine will not last for more than 3 year if it was stroked to that level.

I would have better luck taking a b20 block and use the same vtec head...but I dont want to split my engine apart just yet...

With the conversion to 1.8 with the b18c crankshaft , the right size rods and w/ the same ctr pistons...the engine will run at least 220+ hp and 130+ lb torque...it can do this because the compression will be at 12.5:1 approx.
I got info from jun, spoon and isp racing, and they told me that this would be a better road than to go 2.0l
My car will be fully NA
