Question Mustang GT Vs Camaro SS

I am 18, and going off to college. My parents have finally broke down and agreed to buy me a car. Given price range among other things i have narrowed it down to a Mustang GT or a Camaro SS. I wont have the funds to modify the car that i get for a while, so i am reliying on stock performance. And while handeling plays a part in my decision, i am truly buying the car for raw power (1/4 mile & 0-60). Am also considering a Firebird. If all things are equal (year model, miles, and features) which will perform better? (Am new to this, so if i made any mistakes i appologize).

I grew up a Ford fan, and I still like Fords A LOT, but I came to recognize an undeniable truth: for hot-rodding, you can't beat the small-block Chevy. BUT...if I were to choose between a Mustang with a V-8 or a Camaro (or Firebird) I would studiously avoid the later model F-Body cars because so much of the engine is underneath the windshield and dash area. To me, it looks very difficult to work on. In your shoes I would probably just find the best deal on a sharp, appealing car of either pedigree and go with it, but I would be mindful of whatever limitations are inherent to that model. And ease of maintenance would definitely be a point of consideration.

Haha...bet I didn't help you make up your mind one bit!

Waht year are you looking at? Since you said SS I'm guessing the newer bodystyle.. so definitely grab the SS.

The v8 in it is bigger and badder than the GT. The LS1 is pretty similar to the LS6 in corvettes, and I've driven both Gt and Z28 and I liked the Chevy more. Mustangs are still potent, but since you're running stock numbers then go with the Chevy.

I'm disappointed by the syling of the Camaros though. I seriously thinking they could have at least updated the interior before discontnuing the Camaro. Lumina style upholstery, a loud turn signal lever with a soft turn signal tick, the stereo rocks but the dash is huge and bulky, and most of all I really hate the steering wheel. It has no grip in the back for your fingers and wants to slide through my easy grip on a sweaty day.

But youll never see a ford with t-tops... I really like those (after overheating on grapevine 2 times in one day.. you appreciate them a WHOLE lot more. That is, of course, until I put in some skyviews under my roof (just dreaming). Never heard of it done b4...

my theory is this: you'll need something that chicks will dig, so go ask the girls you know what they think and get that. Unless they say jetta.

Thanx for all the replys. I was looking at 2002 camaro, and a 2003 GT. I think both cars look nice, but i really like the stangs hood scoup. Was thinking bout a convertable, but read some stats that say it effects the performance slightly. Is that true?

IF all you care about is 1/4 times 0-60 and nothing else, Just go get a SS its the fastest out of the box and you said you werent gonna mod it. Yes convertibles are slower and dont handle as well. The have extra bracing to make up for the lack of a roof which is were all the strengh of a uni-body car. So the couple hundred extra pounds to slow the car up.

Get the SS. Its faster and has over 60rwhp over a GT, 215-230rwhp compared to 280-315rwhp. If you want to go cheaper, Why not get an LS1 Z28 or Formula/Trans Am? An SS is no different than a Z28 in performance, as a Ram air WS6 is no different compared to a Formula/Trans Am. The parts are a little more expensive but a 4.6s aftermaket leaves little to make power with unless you go FI.

going just for performance, i'd say ss - but i strong believe that the gt is a better car all around. Why don't you try to track down a used bullitt gt?

How is the SS Camaro similar to a Z06?

LS1 < LS6.

Not the Z06 but the LS6. THe LS6 is basically the same thing as the LS1. You can make your own LS6 conversion for the LS1 buying its heads, cam, and other things. Even some F-bodies from 01-02 received the LS6 block from the Z06 during production. Also not to mention the 02 ZL1 had the LS6 engine as well

Havent considered the bullit, and dont really have any info on it. Jus thought it was like a regular gt. I will do some research, but in the meantime any info on it would be great. 0-60, hp, 1/4 mile times, ect...
As far as the cobra goes, since i am under 25 i cant afford the insurence. Have to pay for the insurence myself, and insurence for like an SVT is really expensive. Good thought though, actually considered it, but i wouldn't have any money left for gas.
