Question 92 Civic VX

How's it going all?
Question from an ignorant new civic VX owner:
I just bought this car for the sole purpose of great gas mileage ('92 Civic VX, 5 speed manual, 3 dr hatch with 157K miles) which by the way is supposed to get me 55 MPG but I'm only getting 35 MPG so I have two questions:
The '92 Civic VX is supposed to come with a "Vtec" engine. I was told that Honda didn't begin actually inscribing the word "Vtec" on the engines of the Civic's until 1993, which would explain why my '92 doesn't have that inscribed into the engine if this is true. Would any of you know? I just bought this car three weeks ago (again for the gas mileage only) and replacing the fuel filter, cold air intake, plugs, wires, and dist. cap hasn't improved my gas mileage ! I'm about to replace the oxygen sensor this weekend, and hopefully this will improve my MPG. I realize that the car won't give me 55 MPG w/157K on the engine, but perhaps 45-50? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

If your not sure if its vtec or not look at the engine code and go to google.com and type in the engine code and you should get charts telling you the stats on the engine.

I had a 92 vx up till a couple of months ago and it does have a VTEC in it but its the same kind of VTEC thats in the HX but a 1.5 insted of a 1.6. It was rated at 55mpg but I dont think I got that due to it having 123k and my heavy foot, although I believe it was close to 40+. But now with a 00 Si I wish I could get such great gas mileage in that. I work 36 miles out of town and the Si at 80mph ride close to 5k rpms

I bought the civic specially for gas mileage.
I have a CA VX model which I believe does not
have the lean burn mode like the federal one.

When I first filled up after taking ownership of the car,
I calc 40 mpg (not my driving). The next two full fill up with
my driving style, I got 46 and 48 mpg. I pump the tires and
the next two fill ups have been 49.6 and 49.7 MPG. I'm
still trying to break 50 mpg, but it's close enough. I've only
owned the car for about three weeks and am very happy
with it. I'm getting great gas mileage - twice what I usually
get.

If you are into great gas mileage cars like the VX or HX join the
VX / HX list.

Vtec?

To check if it is VTEC look on the rear of the head (firewall side) and you should see a Vtec solenoid on the rear of the head if there is a cover or nothing at all obviosly it is not vtec. Good luck.

Re: 92 Civic VX

i think as the engine gets older especially with more miles...the efficiency of the engine decreses thus decreasing the miles per gallon you get.

Statistics also tell you better number than what it really is.

This is an old thread that should've stayed dead, although I will keep it open, as the person who resurrected it actually had something useful to say, that others might be able to use...

Other than that, my usual rule is, if it hasn't been responded to in over 3 mos., then it needs to stay dead, especially flaming threads.

my vx engine # is d15z1. its near the exhaust manifold. mine is also a '92 and does not say v-tec on the valve cover. however my car gets 45-47 mpg w/ 193k mi on it. when i first got it i was driving it hard to see what it was made of and only got about 38 mpg. but now i baby it-watch the shift indicator-just to get 45-47. my car has bigger tires that oem. so maybe if i change them ill hit 50+. check inside your glove box for your tire size. 165/70 r13 i think only vx and one other one has this size. tire pressure has been critical for me, check yours.

According to fueleconomy.gov, your Civic should get 48 City and 55 Highway. So if your only getting 35mpg and you've installed some things to help the mileage then something isnt right.

Re: 92 Civic VX

I can't believe people are actually still replying and answering the question. Why was it posted in the racing section anyway?
