outer boot replacement questions

finally got to putting my new boots on. i followed the instructions from the previous thread i posted, but i'm lost. how do i get the boots on? i have the axle disconnected from the rotors. the axle is out of the tranny on both sides. the axle shaft slides to a point, but won't come out of the tranny. where do i go from here? i've included some pics of what's going on so if you need more pics let me know. thanks in advance.

Sounds like you're talking about the driver's side halfshaft. It has a circlip that makes it a bit difficult to remove and install. I usually just remove it with on good yank.

However, you can't do that now that you've gotten to this point. It must be pried out. It helps if you rotate the shaft while prying it out. You might have to ease off the prying pressure at some points as you rotate the shaft so it can re-center.

No, you typed it OK. I think you are talking about removing the halfshaft from the driver's side of the gearbox. A circlip is a circular clip that in this case keeps the halfshaft from falling out of the gearbox.

You shouldn't just yank hard at this point becaue the clip has already slipped down in the groove cut into the end of the halfshaft. You'll have to pry it out while rotating the halfshaft slightly.

much thanks goes out to george. he helped me emensely (sp?) with this repair. geo- the rings that we asked you about are inside-they're just hard to find b/c they're small in diameter and their's covered in grease. all in all it took about 9 hours from rolling in the garage to rolling out. the thing that took hella long was the fact that i only bought the plastic boots, not the whole axle. had we replaced the axles it wouldn't have taken a lot less time. if anyone has questions about doing this to their car i am more than willing to help, but geo can probably help you more. once again thank you very much george.

how much did you paid for the rubber boots?
and where did you get them from?
was the installation of the boots hard to install?
did you had to repake the boot with grease?

both of my boots are torn,
should i buy 2 new boots or should i just go get an axle?

i can get an axle from a parts store for 60.00 bucks thats with the core.

i paid $25 for the boots. got them from napa. they came w/ grease, and i bought more grease. to pack it basically you put one side of the boot against the cv joint so no grease leaks out and then you slop that stuff in. we spread it from the axle shaft back toward the cv joint. i highly recommend wearing some surgical gloves when doing this (or any other dirty work on your car). you take those things off and your hands are nice and clean.

if you have the resources, time, and patience i would replace just the boots. if i had to do it over i would replace the whole axle. it'll take a lot less time, energy to replace the axles.
