Just bought a 68 camaro what should i do first?
It's a 68 camaro with minor body dmg but the thing is it about 70% apart, all the removeable body is off, the doors/fenders/hood/tail lights etc.
it has pst suspension all around with a 3.55:1 12bolt lsd and i think it has a 700r4 tranny with a stock 350, what do you guys think i should do to it first? chris

Its got a 4 speed automatic? Interesting... somebody got custom and did a swap
Normally it would of been a Th350. If you're going to race the car or drive it hard, make sure the transmissions been built to take it. 700R4's aren't the worlds stongest.

For ground up restoration (my preference) - Get the body straightened out..fenders, rear, grilled, hood, what have you...paint and get your emblems in order, then work on the interior and then the engine bay to get everything showroom style... For Racing - You should still get the body straightened out but you wouldn't have to worry about the interior as much...are you running 4.10 gears wtih the 12 bolt? I would swap out the 350 for a used 454 and tune it myself if you had the money, headers, exhaust and have fun

no doubt i'm going to get the body stright, the 12 bolt has 3.55, i wouldnt mind a nice 454 but there big time gas hogs and i dont mind running a decent 12, a good 350 can pull it off easy all day long and get 20 mpg with a 6 speed i hear.
but i was wondering about sub frame connectors and maybe a rollcage to keep the car stable and safe? but do i need that kind of thing for a 12 sec ride?

about sub frame connectors, those are always a plus...I would say a rollcage is over doing it at 12 seconds, most rollcages are only applied and/or required at 10.5 and below...( 12 sec and 10.5 is a huge HP difference) Anyway, good luck, find a used 350 and work from there

With your 3.55 and a 6 speed, there is no doubt a well tuned 350 can do 20mpg on the highway, even your actual tranny will do. Sub frame connectors, aluminum body bushings, Cal-Tracs traction bars, all of them are gonna help you off the line. One of the best up grades I've done to my 68 is the 12.4/1 steering box. Look for them on late 80s Trans Am and z/28 or Irocs, make sure they have rear discs and the sport package with the thick sway bar in front. I reduced the lock to lock on my manual steering, from 6-1/2 turns to 2-1/8 turns. It feels great now.

did the steering box require any customization or anything?

The steering box fits perfect, just need to rotate the pitman arm position 180° for use on first gen Camaro. First gen Camaros are rear steer cars (steering linkage behind front wheel's center) opposed to modern Camaros/T/As. If you have manual steering, as it was my case, then you need to order a new pitman arm. The power steering pitman arm has a bigger mounting hole vs the manual unit. With some brands of headers, you may end up with some contact, but thats not only with this box, it happens even with the original PS boxes, all depends on the headers brand. Then, you need to contact Lee Mfg, for a dedicated steering rag joint, some people use some of a later 70s chevy pick ups and some years Camaros, but I didn't had the luck to find one from a donor car around here. I just contacted Lee MFG. and ordered a new/improved rag joint. Also ask for the power steering hose adapters, the older cars have english threaded couplings while modern boxes have metric threaded couplings. With the adapters you're supposed to use your existing PS hoses, if thats the case. You can also make your own custom hoses, with english threads at the pump and metric at the box. Lee Mfg can also change the internals of your actual PS box and make it a quick ratio, this for those who want the correct original look on their Camaros. Good luck with your new proyect...

First thing you should do is trade me for my 70 C 20..haha j/k..put it together. Do the body work. Do it right since its apart anyway. I say spend most on paint and body since thats what usualy will help with resale incase your ever short on money and need some fast cash.
