Intake systems that offer K&N filter elements are good buys. Other types of filters can be qustionable.
Installation of these things is pretty easy. Most intakes come with good instructions, and it only takes an hour or so even if you onlyhave moderate mechanical ability. Some things to consider when choosing an intake: it is important that the intake not suck hot air from the engine bay or you may actually lose performance. Heat shields that don't completely isolate a section of the engine bay around the filter are crap. A heat shield does no good if it wraps around the filter element but still breathes hot engine air. Some intakes have downpipes that suck air from near the ground. These can be iffy since they often suck up road water and dust, and the air near pavement on a hot day is very hot. Also, check that the juntion between the filter piping and the Air Mass Sensor is a smooth connection. Some simply bolt a cylindrical tube to a square opening in the air mass sensor. This kind of abrupt junction slow down intake air. It should be a smooth transition. Good luck.

Probably just a socket wrench and some sockets. Pliers and a screwdriver, nothing major. A digital camera is good too, I like to document all the work that I do on my car. I'd be interested to see your install.
