Tiptronic is what BMW decided to call their 'manual' mode of the automatic. The tranny just holds the gear you tell it to until it becomes dangerous then shifts for you, unless you shift before that on your own. The 'tip' in tiptronic would be from the way you shift gears, normally by pushing or tipping the shifter forward or back.

It's just an auto with an manual mode.

I thought tiptronic was on Porche, Audi and Volkswagons. I do not think BMW's come with tiptronic transmissions.

You're right. Tiptronic is Porsche's name for the "toggle-type" automatic transmissions. They license this to VW and Audi. BMW calls their system Steptronic.

Does anyone else think the names for these new automatics smack heavily of the 60's? Steptronic, tiptronic, manumatic, shifttronic, flav-o-matic, shift-o-rama, fast-o-matic. Kind of ridiculous.

"Shift-o-rama"....you should have been in automotive marketing in the 1950s.

Unhappy Steptronic

Well guys,
If you are a true enthusiast, "Step" is NOT the way to go! Compared to other auto trannys, it is superior. BUT... compared to a manual trans, performance is at your command. If I had to do it again, it would be a stick! (As the old saying goes... Ask the man who owns one!)

Re: Tiptronic Trans

my friend has a "tip-tronic" vw. it's just a regular automatic thats lets you change gears. he insists that it's the same as manual and i just laugh.
