help me out, trying to practice drift :/

i went out to a parking lot tonight and tried to practice, mostly i did the "power over" thing where you just oversteer and gas it to get the back to slide out. I could never get the front to break traction though, rear would just keep sliding until i left off the gas and then it would line up with the front. Is this just because i wasnt going fast enough? orr..? please, advice!

also, what kind of roads do/did you practice on when you first started? seems i cant go back to that parking lot now(explination later) so i will have to find somwhere else i can practice.

also, heres a funny story about my evening -
went to local empty parking lot, and started to put in my silencer so i wouldnt attract as much attention. so i get the thing in, but the screw hole wouldnt line up. and it was stuck in there pretty good so i coudlnt get it back out to line it up because it had gotten too hot to touch from the muffler. so i figure i will just drive around until it blows out in the parking lot. anyway, a cop tells me to leave before the silencer blows out. so i just get out of there, trying to stay at low rpm. anyway i almost get home but then i hear my exhaust note get really loud (crap silencer blew out) and on a highway too. so i loop around and i see it, it looks ok but i will have to see. so i pull over and wait for the road to clear, CLANG truck drives by, ahh crap. it is mangled lol. so i am out a pratice spot and out a silencer. haha

LOL

best place to learn is in the rain in a completely deserted parking lot with no telephone/light poles and very few if not any people around. Only people that should be around are friends...in cars...a little ways away...they can tell you what you're doing wrong and looking like from the outside and you can adjust what you are doing inside.

And before you try "drifting" again, actually read a few FAQs on it to get the feel for what you're trying to do. Drifting isn't just winging it, it's a refined skill of taking something that is nearly out of control and making it into a useable form of transport. You can find some FAQs on google or any other search engine.

uh yea i was in a deserted parking lot with no light poles. i have read faqs, all i tried was power over and clutch kick since that was what i understood to be the simpler methods. i wasnt just winging it, but there is only so much you can do with limited experience. care to enlighten me, since you sure talk like you are experienced.

I got a fwd right now and thats what most of my exp is from so it can't compare to a rwd. The way you posted in the beginning sounded like you just got your 240 and went out in a parking lot with barely any preping. I don't drift...I can ass drag :-/...want a rwd to try real drifting tho. It also doesn't make you seem a lot of experience with the last section about the silencer lol.

My suggestion since you have read FAQs already is to just keep trying and vary you technique until you get something more than powersliding or skidding. you can try turning the wheel a bit harsher back and forth too...approaching at lower speeds and continuing the drift at low speeds will definitely not get you much front sliding unless you are on wet pavement. Wet pavement is also a lot more easy to lose control so it's a crappier to control to car, but easier to lose control and learn on IMO.

Ice works great too

The most you should mess up is your tires if you mess up in an empty lot...find a new one away from Officer Crapass. Industrial Parks are alright though the ones around my house are too easily seen from major roads so it may be a similar problem in your area.
