well you could have a bad gasket somewhere so oil would leak into the cylinder or one or more of the piston rings could be bad so oil ends up in the cylinder and burns. thats the only things i could think of though, but i dont know too much.

How many miles do you have on the car? Any engine work done to it?
1. Worn rings
2. Blown head gasket
3. Valve stem seals are cracked/worn out. This usually clears up after the car heats up a bit. Really see smoking on startup.
4. Also, if the egr/pcv valves are clogged/stuck could cause very light smoke caused by not clearing the top end of oil gases.

Compress test is what I would recommend doing first.

about $12-$13 for the haynes manual. and another $5 for the pressure guage at the autoparts store. plus the total opportunity cost of the 25 minutes it'll take to do it in your driveway. Not sure what numbers you want (off hand) but the manual will tell you. should also have suggestions as to what the problem may be based on the pressure readings.

yeah a compression test is a good suggestion, and it's easy to do, you can do it in your driveway. just get someone to turn the key for you, unless you have freakishly long arms.
