Sounds like a ignition prob. It could be that the timing is not accurate or that the coil is starting to go. If not that then maybe the fuel pump is gonna die.
It could be a few other thing but thats what I think it could be.

Ive had it a year and its been doing it the whole time, the people I bought it from said its been doing it for god knows how long and its just something you get used to...I still havent lol

I also have a 89' cherokee and it does take a long time to turn over. I read somewhere that some of the vehicles produced have this delay because of the ECU. I know how frustrating it is but mine has always started like that.

Sounds like the CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) is going bad.
This is very common with earlier model Cherokees.

What would you say about a 94 Grand Cherokee with the same type sypmtoms. Sometimes it has long crank times and you need to push on the gas and other times it starts right up. All ignition components have been replaced. I think the only sensor that hasn't been replaced is the Cranshaft position sensor. Also plugs seem to be running real hot. Engine was recently rebuilt due to a hole in the #6 piston. Never figured out the cause. Thanks for the help in advance.

I own a 97 sport, the long cranking only occurs when the truck has been sitting for a while (overnight). What I have found is, turn the ignition to just before starting, wait 10 sec. then crank to start. The truck starts with less cranking. You have to wait for the fuel pump to pressurize the fuel system
