ok... this was coming... and im to my wits end... tuning? and why does it have to be

alright many of you have probably seen my post about why do you tune an older car with modern parts? i know that there are alot of real cars that are older models that have been tuned with more current parts but is ANYBODY here knowledgable about older cars and know about what was availibable for the car at that time? is anybody interested in build an accurate TIME related car? i see these great kits like old Glorias and such and realisticly they would have oval colectors and dual tips and an open breather intake. am i to old to relate with the modellers here? does anybody research a car build? does anybody find the beauty in an off the showroom car? it seems like everyone here is like... 19" plus rims and Apex exhaust is the only way to tune a model which is far from the point especially when it comes to older cars. is this not "original"l enough? it bothers me alot.

Generational differences.

I'm occasionally itched by the fact that people here would be better off molding clay pots than making body kits, but time is time, and you can't change time.

I love doing box-stock builds because I like to use the parts that I paid for. Luckily, I'll sometimes run across a kit that has a 2-in-1 option for street or show.

I agree with your view on keeping older cars tuned to their proper genre. Muscle cars, in my opinion, look great with torque thrusts and a beefy supercharger sticking out of the hood. But then again, muscle car builds on here are pretty rare, and when they're done, they're done right.

To each his own, right?

Would you please stop generalizing? Look around, you'll see a lot of classic cars built in all their glory. Your "it seems like everyone here is like... 19" plus rims and Apex exhaust..." is simply not true.

And even if it were (which it is not), why worry about what others build? I don't appreciate this trend much myself, but I realise that the builder wants it like that and it's his/her every right to do so. I tend to worry about my own models, I have enough headache with them

and i ALWAYS support the " to each his own" theory!!!!!!!!!!! but there is some amazing talent here and it kills me that they arent doing more period related pieces.... or should i say "Museum" pieces... there is a ton of talent but why limit yourself to the normal big rims/exhaust route... do something original. like the gunmetal Skyline.... too common... hopefully someone will see my point. not to say you shouldnt do the GM SL but after that .... dig in... again... amazing talent but to many themes?!?

I'd say about 40% of this forum is rather fond of the street racing trend, and a large percentage of the members here watch JGTC.

Seems to be where most of it is coming from...

Hm, don't think It's a generational difference, I am 20 , and love to see some historic cars built box-stock , and also do this myself.

But as you said, there seems to be this growing trend of customising classics with modern day pieces, such as huge-ass rims, turnbo's and more of the same.

Luckily, they are ONLY models, and hey you know, luckily we don't all have the same taste for cars, so we could see some diversity (R34, Z, RX7 come into mind ).

But I agree, it should be nice to make a custom directly linked to its era, and please, do post some nice pics.

IMO the tuner scene is were we are heading due to the lower cost of imports and they are easy to get/find.
I have been involved in both the Hotrod scene and Import scene and the trend i see is older people that have now had there family's etc are now returning to there Hotrod roots.
The younger people cant afford a big old classic Chev/price to run one etc and most only seem to be intrerested in getting from point A to B as quick as they can, therefore a cheaper import is the way to go.
Plus the import scene seems to have such a huge range to pick from these days.

Not really the case over here in Australia. The old classics are alot cheaper and easier to find then a newer imported car. Australian youths seem to just have no respect for the older cars of the say 70s era, I do. My friend had a Mitsubishi FTO for his own first car, which he thought was the way to go, but it wasn't. Alot of complicated issues appeared within months and now the car is off the road, will no longer be roadworthy at all and he is going to court against the car dealer. What a waste of $24,000 in my opinion. I'd rather pay $4,000 for a mint condition Holden HX. It's an easy choice, millions of reproduction parts available in Australia & a 253 V8 isn't that hard on fuel, It's cheap it gets you there and it's reliable.
I don't dislike newer cars, I just see that an older local car is the better choice. Last thing I'm sorry to say but the import scene has less then half the selection of the classics here. Without paying over $10,000 all you can get is an old RX(3-7) or a automatic CA18DE S13 Silvia(if your lucky enough to find one). To sum it all up I think that the best choice for youths would be a locally made car. In Australia either a Holden or a Ford, America a Chevy or a Ford, a Pontiac etc etc etc.
Want your kid to be safe? Buy them a late 70s Volvo 200 series, they are very safe and don't have the horsepower to get to a top speed that is dangerous.
Anyway freakmech was refering to model cars . But it's still good to have a ramble now and then.

There is no doubt that the 'tuner' genre is a very fresh modeling subject and definately the growth sector of car modeling at the moment. This is why it stands out and thus the hot topic for debate. I love tuners, its what i'm really into and I imagine will be for a long time. However, i'm pretty sure i'm like everyone else on this forum in that I enjoy and appreciate all forms of car modeling coz, just like everyone else, I LOVE CARS!

I can only speak of my experience with my 1:1 49 GMC.

It is getting some modern upgrades.
Simply for the fact that I want to drive it reliably, and safely.

I could restore it for about the same money as upgrading it would be.

Do you know how hard it is to walk into an autoparts store looking for 54 year old spark plugs? Or lever action shock aborbers.

Its getting a 350 Chevy V8. The 228 strait six works. With a whooping 75 horses, and a top speed of 45mph. And thats with a 2 mile strait run.
BUT..If it breaks down. ANY mechanic in America will be able to work on it.

I've built a model of how i want the final product to look, and sit, with some upgrades like the V8, disk brakes, and independant suspension.
I know some guys do it the other way around.. But i wanted to kinda see it before i started turning wrenchs..

Adding modern bits to classics isn't a bad thing necessarily.

Now if i was to add a 1.8L VTEC civic motor too it. I'd be bitchslapped by everbody that looked at it.

Personally, I build rally and race cars, I research the cars as extensively as I can before starting on a build.
If somebody wants to put half a tube of putty on a model, it is their model to put it on.

I don't put 19" rims on my models, I don't put Apexi exhaust tips on my models, I build the model out the box with the after-market accessories added which are made to enhance the kit, not change the entire appearance of the kit.

Actually, the only times I have actually modified anything completely was to make it look more like the real thing since the model wasn't accurate.

Your 90% is still a generalisation and possibly an exaggeration.

Well I'd love priod cars as mush as tuners...
If I had to build a mk2 escort or a porsche I'm going for period style but if I'm gonna built a MkI Golf I'll have the alternative of a Euro tuner or a upgrade with modern parts...
Also other than car specifics aspects is something that you propably know since you open this subject...Period tunning is mostly about suspension, tires and motor and there is no source to get period tires or you get 3 diff sets of wide 13'' and 25 different sets of 17-18-19" which means less variety add to that that most models might come enginless or the builders don't real care about the engine so you get the point...
(from the above I put aside the muscle cars since there is huge variety and you can easily get model period tunning parts...

An excellent example of great older models tunned with modern parts is Laurent(GTI1800) which build in an awesome style and sort of make his own trend,I love his models and to be honest I like them ten times better than a period looking car...Simply it's the quality and the imagination of the build...I can see a pic of his model and I know it's his...it's Laurent style
