Painting a car Flat Black
Has anyone ever painted a car flat black or any flat color for that matter?
I'm building an R32 GT-R and I was going for the same look of Sport Compact Car's Project Silvia which they painted flat black. It looks good, no-nonsense, no fluff, all business kind of look. I'm just not sure if it would work out well on a model. I don't want to paint it and find out it looks like crap and start over. |

That Silvia does look good and that was spray paint! can you believe it? they had a tutorial on how they did it. anyhow you never know till you try but heres a suggestion. go ahead and paint your car flat black... if it looks bad then just pretend it was a primer coat and spray a dark gloss color over it! but flat colors always go on much more even then gloss so it should be easier. but might not be as smooth and you wont want to sand it so youll want to use a flat clear coat that you can buff for a smooth finish. thats all there is to it! hope this helps

The pic is not working.
You have to get a very even coat of paint on the body to get a good flat finish or it can dry in slightly different shines.

Well you can use a flat top coat instead of a gloss. Try Floquil Figure Flat in the spray can. It works great as a flat top coat finish.

I've painted a couple cars flat colors, a couple primer rods from the Revell kits. Quick and dirty builds to burn off stress during exams. Anyway, on those cars it looks hard core. One I used Krylon Ruddy Brown primer, and on the other I just used Testors flat black from the spray can. I was worried about it coming out in different shines, and also about the oils from my skin colelcting on the paint and making it have different textures. Niether of which happened, the paints both went on super smooth, and though I don't handle them much, the little I do hasn't left any greasy prints so it seems A-ok. I'd just go for it, it'll look sweet. And if it doesn't, eh, it'll just be an undercoat.

Flat black is going to be impossible to polish unless clear coat is used.

Another thing to try is to go through the whole process of priming and painting the car gloss black, and then lightly sand it so that the paint is dull, then spray dull coat/flat coat on it. I usually do this with the interiors when I want a special color that doesn't come in flat, and it turns out pretty good. If you do this, it might be a good idea to prime it with black primer. That way, it'll be okay if you sand through the gloss black.

Thats a big negative! Automotive base coats, (the color) that we use at the shop, are all flat drying, once you put clear cote on it then it will be glossy, so if you put clear cote over flat black it will be just as shiny if you sprayed a shiny base under it. Just spray the flat black exactly how the P-man said, nice and even an at a steady speed and it should come out good.

does anyone here read posts before putting in there 2 cents??? i did say use a FLAT CLEAR COAT, and yes lots of companies make them. also SATIN type clear coats go on flat as well. please read all responses before try to reply... you make things very confusing. my response was very clear as to what to do if you simply read it. sorry but there are so many redundant posts here where people ask questions in a thread that have already been answered.
